If you're a slower runner looking for motivation - or anyone looking for affirmation of life - RW columnist John 'The Penguin' Bingham is your man. We're proud to bring you this index of links to his columns.

But first... the Penguin on...

Himself, pre-column...
'... an untrained writer whose only running credential was that he was slow – but used to be slower'

Getting started...
"I decided that when I could run three miles, I’d be a runner. ... So out I’d go – without reaching the three miles. Day after day I accumulated evidence that I was not a runner... But the point I’d failed to realise about running was that the key is to enjoy the journey."

The sport he loves...
"Every run is a chance to be where you want to be. With this revelation, my running changed. I stopped denying the joy I was feeling. I stopped accumulating days of failure. I began living more ‘in the moment’, looking at each run as an opportunity to appreciate what was right in front of me."

The London Marathon...
"My goal in any marathon is to ‘get round’. In the back of my mind I like to think about ‘getting round’ in around five hours. By five hours I mean five hours as recorded on my watch, not the official clock."

Training for the Antarctica Marathon...
"Eager for a new challenge, I spent months training in cold, snowy conditions and experimenting with clothes, kit and shoes. I even stopped shaving two months before the trip so I’d have that rugged, polar-explorer look."

John Bingham has written over 70 columns for Runner's World - and we're going to upload a new one each week. Scroll to the bottom of the page!
