1. Tamworth 10K, Staffordshire

Date in 2012: October 14

The flattish grounds below the Grade I listed Tamworth Castle provided the starting and finishing lines for the 400 runners who hoped to battle their way to a new PB last year. The canalside section in Fazeley was where many kicked on with this aim in mind during this fledgling event.

2. Gosport Half Marathon, Hampshire

Date in 2012: November 20

All the elements needed to record your best time are in place on this even, virtually traffic-free course which includes a section along Lee-on-Solent prom. It attracted a bigger field of 1,800 entrants last year, but organisers feel there’s still plenty of room to avoid anyone having their style cramped.

3. Llanelli Waterside Half Marathon, Carmarthenshire

Date in 2012: March 3

Already gaining a favourable reputation as an adeptly organised event, it’s also one for PB hunters with its inviting out-and-back course heading through the swish redeveloped waterfront area. For added razzmatazz, this year’s event will begin and finish at the stadium of its top local rugby union club, the Scarlets.

4. Maidenhead Half Marathon, Berkshire

Date in 2012: September 8

Now offering a flatter and quicker course after the route was changed from its 2011 debut, these two large loops starting in the town centre are crying out to be run at speed. And with well thought out parking arrangements, you can make a quick getaway afterwards too.

5. Kent Roadrunner Marathon, Gravesend, Kent

Date in 2012: June 1

Date in 2013: June 1- Enter online now

Seventeen laps around the new multimillion-pound Cyclopark tarmac cycling track in north-west Kent isn’t your typical marathon course, but you can perfect your split times as you glide round its sweeping curves and gentle slopes. Its unique feel and claim of dishing out last year’s chunkiest finishers’ medals should mean this quirky marathon will run and run.
