Race the Train

1. Race the Train, Tywyn, Gwynedd

Date in 2013: August 17 - Find out more

This is a ‘training’ run with a difference as you’ll be one of 1,000 competitors chasing a steam engine along the tracks of the Talyllyn Railway from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and back. And no, it’s not a crazy one-off – this 14-miler is entering its 30thyear. With a backdrop of the Snowdonia National Park, this is one mighty pretty race should you find the time or energy to notice.

2. Worksop Half Marathon, Nottinghamshire

Date in 2012: October 28

If you’re a fan of the National Trust you’ll relish the majority of this half through Nottinghamshire’s rolling Clumber Park, owned by the Trust. A lumpy-bumpy course guides you through majestic parkland and ancient woodland, and past the estate’s impressive lake before guiding you back to the finish at Worksop town hall.

3. Steyning Stinger, Steyning West Sussex

Date in 2012: March 4

Date in 2013: March 3 - Enter online now

Extremely popular with those who enjoy their full and half marathons ‘off’ rather than ‘on’ road and don’t mind a fair bit of climbing too. The fantastic views from the full’s four steep hills – the ‘stings’ that give the race its name – give the swarms of runners a real buzz as they fly toward the finish.

4. Blackminster Half, Evesham, Worcestershire

Date in 2012: March 10

Date in 2013: March 10 - Enter online now

This new race successfully showcased the wonderful Worcestershire countryside and villages when it made its bow last spring. There was also one major upside to the nasty hill at mile 12 - runners could get gain an even more panoramic view of the Vale of Evesham when they reached its peak.

5. Grand Union Canal Half Marathon, London

Date in 2012: November 11

Brightly painted narrow boats and no shortage of locks add an extra layer of colour to this already delightful run along the canalside. This point-to-point, which starts at Cowley Recreation Ground, gently meanders along mainly towpaths and traffic-free stretches towards Watford’s premier green space, Cassiobury Park.
