The experience: The Itchen Way is a 51km footpath that follows the River Itchen from its source near Hinton Ampner Houes to its confluence with Southampton Water.

Heading downstream, the footpath takes ramblers and runners through lush chalk downlands to the historic city of Winchester. Here it skirts around that city’s ancient cathedral, and continues its course south through Winchester’s famous water meadows.

Harfoot, pictured, is a regular runner of the Itchen Way: "It's liberating to be able to run in such a beautiful place," he says.
