Nigel Barge Memorial Race 5.0 (Glasgow, January 7) 
Named after a Maryhill Harriers club runner, this five-miler is part of Scotland’s running history. Now into its sixth decade, it’s seen several course changes over the years, but still tours the city centre.
Starting at the college campus, the out-and-back course heads out over Hogmanay Hill, before crossing the Forth & Clyde Canal for the first time. Then it’s along rolling terrain and a final climb over the canal, and a flat finish. A great way to kick-start your 2006.

Would your training run make for an exciting race course? With 18 years of experience running in Wiltshire's glorious Pewsey Vale, the organiser of the Rough 'n' Tumble 10 thought that his would. And he's not just an average runner - he's responsible for organising the famous Terminator 10 already.
Setting out from the village of Milton Lilbourne, the race dips and rises along tracks and fields, through woodland and across dales, before a sharp descent. Then it’s up Giants Grave for classically scenic hilltop views, and a final dash down towards the finish. The homemade cakes at the finish will feel like a worthy reward.

It would be easy to tell you how running the Folksworth 15 would help your spring marathon plans. A 15-mile warm-up in February is perfect... but there’s much more to this race.
Now in its 17th year and comprising two nicely testing laps, the race head out towards Milbourne, before turning south. The testing hill at around the seven-mile mark breaks up the course as you head towards the village of Caldecote. Then it’s across the line for another lap of Cambridgeshire running. Marathon preparation or not, it’s a top-notch race in a quiet month.

Not the Roman IX (Warwickshire, January 22)
Starting from Alveston Hill, the race gives runners the chance to see parts of ‘Shakespeare’s Country’ as it winds along country roads.
Before reaching a testing climb up the imaginatively named Long Hill, runners will run down into pretty Loxley – alleged burial ground of Robin Hood – with its rewarding views out over Stratford and the surrounding countryside.

So this race isn’t actually in January. Well spotted. But by the time we’ll preview February’s highlights, this popular little event will be full to the rafters and you’ll be forced to look elsewhere. So whether you're a racing novice or seasoned competitor out for a PB, this is a one of the biggest five-milers around. Well-organised and flat, it's also one of the fastest in the country.
