Bad timing for the Crewkerne 9 – headline-hitting torrential rain and flash floods hit the area only days before the race. But the competitors only saw this as a challenge to overcome.

Of course, this put paid to many PBs, but being quite an irregular distance, this wasn’t a problem for those running their first nine-miler.

Mud, debris and puddles lay in wait for runners in a race that included 442m of ascent – leaving many aching the next day.

Water stations were abundant – manned stalls as well as the puddles – which helped runners cope with the rising temperatures, especially when the sun came out in full force towards the end.

After a hard slog, finishers were welcomed across the line with a call of their name over the PA system, as well as a T-shirt and a banana to recover some of the energy they’d expended.

The race, as well as the junior race and fun run, was held as part of Crewkerne Carnival Week, with all proceeds going to support local charities.
