In the splendid surroundings of the Lake District, any race could be a success without too much effort. So it’s a credit to everyone behind the Haweswater Half-Marathon that the race is going from strength to strength not just because of its dramatic backdrop.

It starts in the village of Bampton and heads out in to remote mountainous countryside, running around Haweswater and over Mardale Head; it’s fair to say there’s not a dull point on the course. Part of the spectacular route are the tough-but-doable hills, which go down well with runners.

But it’s the friendly, supportive atmosphere (from both marshals and fellow runners) and the textbook organisation that make this beautiful race just about perfect, no matter what the conditions.
