The Swanage Half-Marathon is said to be the oldest County Championship road race in the UK, and was originally a 12-miler.

Changed in 2005 to a half-marathon, it is a testing course, starting at Swanage Bay and running through the beautiful undulating Purbeck Hills.

Even the calf-burning climbs couldn’t prevent more than 360 runners turning out in Dorset this year on July 26.

With no road closures, some runners were uneasy about their proximity to passing traffic in places, but this quibble aside, most participants declared the organisation to be faultless, with sunny weather and the post-run carnival festivities fitting ways to help celebrate the centenary edition of the race.

Lee Piercy won in 1:15:52, while Charlotte Moore was the first woman in 1:23:52.
