There can’t be many opportunities to run with rhinos in this country, but the Whipsnade Zoo 10K on June 3 provided the chance to chase all sorts of exotic wildlife.

An earlier start for this year’s event was welcome but the sun was still fierce at 9.30am when more than 500 runners set off on the fast, flat three-lap course, paced at times by wallabies, rhinos and an onager (pictured).

Many runners made a day of it, viewing the wildlife at a more leisurely pace over a picnic later thanks to free entry to the Zoo being included in the race fee.

Andrew Symonds won in 34:25, with Louise Peters first lady in 39:15.
