Lancelot “Capability” Brown, the fashionable 18th century landscape gardener, unwittingly provided both the highs and the lows of the Woodstock 12, which took place on September 16 this year.

Brown’s manmade undulations provide the stunning views over Blenheim Palace and Park which make the race great, but also the three laps of hills which make it so tough.

Those weren’t the only ups and downs: the low-key, friendly atmosphere was a hit, as ever, but some runners felt the finish wasn’t clear enough and that more water should have been concentrated at the drinks stations, rather than simply on view in Brown’s beautiful “natural” lake.

Mark Hall won in 1:08:43, with Jane Raffell first lady in 1:17:45.
