RW's Top 100 UK Races of the Year: Other Honours

Top races of the year - other honours

  • The numbers in brackets are last year's position; the times are last year's men's and women's winning times
  • If we've been given an event's details, you'll find it in the Race Diary.

Best series
The Yateley 10K series, staged on the Hampshire-Surrey borders, is a popular summer event that attracts good fields for the three races.

Best monthly event
The Serpentine 5K is a simple, no-frills event – a fairly flat lakeside 5K in London’s beautiful Hyde Park – held on the last Friday of each month. The race is usually split into two – with the faster runners starting a few minutes ahead of those who intend to run 20 minutes or more.

Best multi-stage event
The demise of the Tour of Tameside left a vacuum in the multi-stages this year, and the best in our view was the Guernsey Easterrrruns. The concept of four races in four days – a 10K, a cross-country, a relay and a half-marathon – all in different parts of a welcoming island, attracted many from the mainland to the Channel Islands. Sadly, it looks as if 2001 was its final running.

Biggest series
The fact that the Race For Life has close to 100 races over a summer makes it difficult to pick out a single race, and the concept of it is different to that of a standard road race. However, the series is now far and away the biggest in Britain, and they’re all held in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere that encourages women into running.
