The Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge

RW's own Kerry McCarthy takes on the 10th anniversary of this 341km challenge through Tasmania's wildest landscape

Our race editor Kerry McCarthy has touched down in Tazmaina ready and raring to take on perhaps his toughest challenge to date – and he’s tackled some almighty physical feats over the years. The Swisse Mark Webber Tasmania Challenge is a 341km race spanning across five days and has competitors run, bike and kayak the distance.

The opening day will see more than 80km of racing in scenic Mole Creek before the action heads to the highlights of Cradle Mountain and the rugged west coast of Strahan over the following two days. The teams then visit Mount Field, a lake-filled alpine region, on day four before a final day of multisport challenges in and around the beautiful Tasmanian capital of Hobart.

For a taster of what the race entails, take a look at these highlights from previous year's.

Former F1 driver Mark Webber set up the race in 2003 after taking part in a 1000km Tasmanian adventure with friends and it has run six times since. With the challenge looming ahead, Webber has offered Kerry to following gems of encouragement:

"My top tip is to go hard but don’t smash yourself on the first or two days. It’s a marathon, not a sprint so you need to keep something in reserve for the end of the week. Take the time to look around you. Not only to make sure you don't miss the scenery, but to make sure you don't get lost. It's pretty lonely out there if you go the wrong way.”

"Also, expect the unexpected. The guys who set the course up are good at that. The core disciplines of kayaking, biking and trekking are just the start, and there's going to be a few nice surprises out there for you this year.”
