In short: An excellent event which was well marshalled and a fantastic route – probably the best summer 10km in Surrey! In full: An excellent event which was well marshalled and a fantastic route – probably the best summer 10km in Surrey! However on the down-side was the congestion along the path by the stream just after the start. As I suggested last year if you stagger the 10km and 5km starts by 15 minutes this could easy alleviate these issues. Alternatively, why not route the 10km course up that very steep hill by Godalming station at the START of the race, instead of at the end?
On a completely separate matter unrelated to the race, I noted the justified comments by the “thirtysomething” lady on inconsiderate car parking. As the main car park was full I parked in the adjacent overflow car park behind the Council offices. I was suddenly confronted by an angry local resident who had come to purchase some masking tape for a DIY job on his car, and who demanded to know the purpose of my visit to Godalming? With a hint of malice, he articulated the police penalise anyone who had not parked “correctly”. Just to ensure that his threats were adhered he walked over and confronted two uniformed PCOS, who had just emerged from the rear of the police station, to presumably vent his frustration. Later, when I went over to the main car park to collect my number I noted the same PCOs taking photographs and registration numbers of a couple of cars parked on yellow chevrons, so perhaps the BMW also received the same treatment?
In short: Brilliant but oh the bottleneck! In full: Like every other reviewer my only complaint is the bottleneck at the start of the race.
If you ignore that point, this is exactly the sort of event to encourage both the casual runner and the more serious athlete. The route is wonderful: a somewhat challenging hill (but nothing too extreme), a lovely section in the Charterhouse grounds to recover, and a nice bit of trail along the river to finish. When you couple that with the friendly marshals and supportive crowd you get a truly excellent race.
I will definitely be running next year! Date of review: May 19, 2015
In short: Beautiful scenery need to get rid of bottle necks! In full: Such a shame that the first 1km involves a lot of walking due to numbers taking park and narrow paths, after that the scenery was stunning and a great challenge of a hill at 8km. I like it when the marshals are encouraging. Date of review: May 18, 2015
In short: More people are turning up for the Godalming Run In full: Before the run started I was very annoyed to see some Irish tw@t park his blue BMW sports car across two disabled parking bays outside Wilfred Noyce Youth Club. If anyone took a photo of his car, please spread it across social media so we can find out who he is and name and shame him. He should spend a year in a wheelchair, having a minimum wage maid wipe his bum so he knows what it's like to be severely disabled.
Thankfully the runners and supporters of the Godalming Run created a great atmosphere to make sure everyone could enjoy the day.
In short: Lovely race but bottle-neck near start In full: Lovely 10k race (mostly) through Charterhouse grounds. It was a shame that there was such a bottle-neck at around 1k and then single track for a bit. Nice scenery - and very hot! Thanks to all the organisers. Date of review: June 14, 2014
In short: Beautiful scenery, friendly hosts and GREAT run! In full: Great new start with plenty of room. Perfect for a post run picnic. Good organisation and friendly marshalls - well done Waverley Harriers and Charterhouse. Very beautiful and challenging course, loved it. Some gripes: 1)sort out the congestion after Borough Rd entering the footpath, and on the footpath itself 2) the fastest 5K runner hit congestion getting out of Charterhouse at the water station Date of review: May 20, 2014
In short: Great atmosphere, Challenging course! In full: Fabulous day for my hometown run and great support from all the Waverley Harriers, marshals and locals. Route change this year created rather an irksome level of congestion - the river path proved difficult for anyone to overtake on. It worked better towards the end of the course last year when we had all had more time to spread out. Still, if you're up for a road/trail challenge then this is the one to do. And let's not forget those hills... Special mention goes to the lovely people with the impromptu water and hose-spraying station half way up the last big hill. Date of review: May 19, 2014
