In short: little bit hilly - and I was only doing the lhalf!!
In full: didn't realize quite how hilly this course was going to be - but a great challenge anyway. Very well organized, although, as with most races, there was a shortage of toilets, but thats pretty much expected !!

In short: Hills, hills, hills
In full: I knew it was going to be hilly but I wasn't prepared for just how hilly. Beachy Head but on the road. A few flats somewhere along the route would be welcome. Great organisation and fantastic marshalls. When I finished I swore never again, but now I'm thinking... maybe.

In short: Tough race but feel like I can take on anything now!
In full: I knew this was going to be a tough marathon and my 3:55 pb was not going to be beaten. In fact I would have been over the moon with a sub 4 hour run.
I spent the weeks leading up to the race checking out forums and course profiles to prepare myself for, not only the daunting distance but the hills which lay ahead. I also knew that the organisers were having trouble with local authorities with regards to the course. It seems the dear locals of Battle don't take too kindly to having their Sunday morning drives disrupted by the inconvenience of a marathon event. As a result the course was changed and ended up being a 6 mile loop with 2 5 mile 'out and backs'
Now - the hills! My God the hills. They were so much worse than I imagined! I took the first 6 mile loop sensibly and felt good by 9 miles however when I hit that first hill it sapped all of my energy. The worse part of the hills is knowing you're going to have to cross the 16 mile mark and do it all over again. It really is soul destroying. A lot of the 'out and back' stages were completely void of any support whatsoever (it is in the middle of some rural roads) so you feel quite lonely running at some stages. At one stage I was thinking whether I was the only one in the race or if I'd taken a wrong turn!
One big organisational blunder was the water station at around mile 19 ran out of water!! Unforgivable as far as I'm concerned. But there was plenty of Cola. Because a gassy, sugary drink is exactly what you need to get through the wall... not!
In the end I somehow managed 3:58 so I was pleased. The best part of completing a tough marathon like this is you feel like you can take on anything afterwards. I'm not sure whether I would part with my hard earned cash for the privilege of participating in this event again though.

In short: Very hilly but stunning scenery and good organisation
In full: Will definitely do again but need to forget the hills first and the course being a third of a mile longer (according to the GPS watches amongst us). The South Downs Marathon was easier! Good friendly atmosphere and faultless organisation. More of these marathons please!

In short: Fantastic Race
In full: The cost of £32 to enter this race did seem a bit steep at first. However the race organisers did answer within 24 hours to a pre race enquiry and had a clear and easy website - which as I didn't receive my pre-race info via e-mail was not a problem as I could easily access the document on the website.

What was pleasing about this race was the opportunity to register the night before. Registration was quick and easy.

Onto the race - a decent attendance but best of all was the chip timing! The course is difficult though all on road however some really tough hills in it especially at the end which was cruel after running 26 (and we had already run up it once so we all knew it was there!).

The marshals were fantastic as were those manning the water stations. Really encouraging group of people. Thank you! The advantage of doing the marathon is you are given bottles of water rather than the flimsy plastic cups and on a hot day this was useful.

Decent medal, and nice t-shirt. I would definitley do it again. You may get a PB here but you'll have to have trained hard.

Great training for those planning on doing on other tough road marathons such as Great Langdale and Snowdonia.

In conclusion - a tough but enjoyable race. Well organised in a nice area. This race will, I am sure, become very popular over the next few years.

In full: Very well organised, marshalls were all positive offering encouragement, decent options at the feed stations rather than the usual water only option. Coke was welcome at the last feed station prior to the killer last hill which was never ending!! Only did the half, not sure how anyone could do the full. Well done to the organisers and thanks to the marshalls.

In short: A seriously hilly course, forget personal bests. On the plus side, stunning scenery, great place for a race and really good value for money. Would recommend to anyone, providing that had done some hill training - as the non locals will testifty!
