In short: Great fun - but harder than expected! In full: Hugely enjoyable for the atmosphere alone! First 1/2 marathon but all the training out of the window as for the first 10 miles I seemed to be stuck behind someone and going too slow, or having to go too fast to overtake. Would definitely do it again - hope they sort the start out though! Date of review: October 10, 2006

In short: This was my first half marathon, and I'm back again this year for more. The atmosphere was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Would like to do it a bit faster this year, but with all those people, its best to just take it easy. Date of review: August 21, 2006

In short: Took 15 minutes to take one step. Then after 2 minutes runing was having to avoid people walking!!! The wave start at the Great South Run was so much better. The 1 1/2 queue for the Metro after the race didn't help either. Date of review: January 4, 2006

In short: More an experience than a race In full: This was first half marathon at the tender age of 50. Didn't really do as much training as I would have liked due to long standing achilles problems(age thing I guess!), so I was really worried when I drove into South Shields the day before and realised there were a lot of steady long inclines. Hills and heavy legs at 11 miles rather than heat really effected my time (2 hrs 8 mins). What it has done has inspired me to do more running and enter other much smaller races. I was sploit on this run because my Mum & Dads house is 50 yards away from the end at Shields....close enough to stagger to at the end! Overall enjoyed it, but would share all the comments about walkers, the start etc. See you next year Date of review: November 2, 2005

In short: Still the best race for atmosphere In full: This is my 3rd time at the GNR, and certainly my most enjoyable. Crowds were great all the way along the route and kept me going. Like everyone else I think the start should be made more organised (possibly using a wave start?). Fortunately I got a good spot in the start line - the only way is to line-up early as in 9am otherwise you will get stuck behind the fun runners/walkers. Was warm but I didn't find the heat oppresive.
Definately will be doing the GNR again. For all it's faults, it is a great race. Date of review: November 1, 2005

In short: Done it 4 years running but 05 was my last time. Far to many people taking part and many who think they can run it in 2 hours but walk within 10 minutes getting in the way of other runners Date of review: November 1, 2005

In short: Worth doing once In full: Having now run in a more local race (Worksop), I would not do the GNR again. It's just too big. The fact that I finished in the top 2000 having only started running in February shows that proper runners steer clear of this fun run/walk. Dodging/accelerating past walkers in the first couple of miles (and more) is a pain in the *rse if you're there to run. Good points - big event so good atmosphere; good medal, t shirt & goody bag.
