In short: Loved every minute of it, what a great atmosphere In full: 1st marathon trained a lot, initial aim was 4hr then lowered to 3.45 a few weeks ago. then thought i could do 3.30. after a few miles realised i would not enjoy the race if i did the constant weaving to gain a few seconds and decided just to try and run it well and enjoy it, and i did. Did 3.40 really happy with that and just tired at the end rather than hitting a wall. Great organisation considering the number of runners. train going to blackheath is my only small complaint but everything else fab especially marshalls and crowd. even saw my family 4 times Date of review: April 18, 2011
In short: Brilliant Marathon In full: it was as every year the best day ever but I got really annoyed in some part because of selfish runners who stopped in the middle of the road instead of start walking on the side. And why was it in certain part sooo narrow ??? I couldnt remember this from last year to be honest. It really cost a lot of energy and certainly time. People please dont put a finish time down you can never never have - specially for your 1st Marathon. Date of review: April 18, 2011
In short: hot, hot, hot, but amazing... In full: another great year, 10,000 people helping 37,500 people achieve their dreams whether that it to get a PB, raise money or do the impossible. all putting themselves out to do their bit. a massive thank you to all that marshaled, gave out water, handed back bags and lots of others who love it just as much. the crowds were amazing again. In short: a truly uplifting event In full: As always, the course and organisation are fantastic. The volunteers, supporters and other runners are what really make this a special event. It's a shame the spectators were allowed to encroach on to the road in a few areas, making what's already a very crowded course very tricky to run well on. Date of review: April 18, 2011
In short: hot, crowded, miles of support, huge crowds In full: Bit too warm for me. Adding a sudden stop + pothole early on gave me huge blisters, which lead to the skin under my right foot coming off with a mile or so to go. I wasn't stopping. I was going to finish. 45 mins late, but going to finish. Would I do it again - Oh yes ! no question, 100% sign me up now please.
The St Johns were great, ( post race foot repairs for me, nothing serious ) they looked so busy, they really are Stars.
Really needs a marshal point in the long tunnel, I stopped at the nearest Police officer to report someone in trouble in the tunnel, should have been better there.
Londons shiny bits are nice. getting there is a pain, and involves the not-so-shiny bits. Date of review: April 18, 2011
In short: Great run, but very busy. PB's difficult In full: I was desperate to break 4 hrs, but with over crowding it was hard to keep up pace. Ended up 4hrs 5mins, if only I could get through the crowds. Great atmosphere though! Date of review: April 18, 2011
In short: Near faulltless organisation, however......... In full: A few suggestions in the hope I get accepted next year for my 20th London Marathon & could see them put implemented:
1/ Increase the cost to £35 so that a technical tee-shirt could be waiting in the goody bag rather than the poor quality excuse of the one yesterday...couldn't exactly wear that one with pride. Goodness knows what the overseas competitors thought...the volunteers faired much better in this respect.
2/ A packet of crisps or salted nuts would have gone down well.
3/ To reduce the obvious waste of water & isotonic drinks at the drinks stations, either make the bottles much smaller as most people even in the warm conditions yesterday, only had a small amount each time & wasted the rest. Either that or have the stations every 2 miles between each station, which would make runners carry them & make better use of the contents.
4/ Include a warning to all the ignorant & selfish runners who were too lazy to dispose of the bottles to the side of the road & just dumped them anywhere. Someone is going to have their marathon curtailed with a serious injury unless this is stopped. Why not have large bins after each station to throw them in?
5/ Allow the elite runners to wear a combination of their Club vest & that of their sponsors.
6/ Be able to seach the results by Club rather than just by finisher's name.
It is still one of the best organised marathons in the world but needs a few simple improvements to be perceived as the best... Date of review: April 18, 2011
In short: Bottom half knackered, top half sunburnt - let's do it again In full: Superb support from the crowds. Missed my target by some way but a great first marathon nonetheless. Huge respect to the medics who helped get us 4.30 plodders to the end! Date of review: April 18, 2011
