In short: Remember to take your parachute for the descents. In full: The first few miles are deceptively easy: along the clifftops from the bleak start to Rottingdean and then along the undercliff walk to Saltdean; inland on the flat until you leave civilization up a long climb and pass the first walkers. From then on it is pretty hairy until the last 5 miles which is basically downhill, though the loose flints on the path will play havoc with your feet ands the guaranteed headwind back along the clifftops will make you long for the Asda car park again. The course was chosen with a devilish glint in the eye. It is well marshalled and the drinks stations come at the right moments. A laid-back race (don't look for Portaloos); there is a supervised baggage drop too, though it isn't mentioned in the race instructions. This year (2004) we got a medal and a free T-shirt. The race organizers make everyone feel very welcome including plodders like me. Date of review: September 6, 2004

In short: A tough, varied course to give ideal hill plus endurance training for marathon runners and anyone who wants a challenge in beautiful scenery. In full: with five major climbs to negotiate this is not for the faint-hearted nor the unfit but it is a terrific race set in the wonderful south downs and well worth the effort. this 20 miler isn't a PB course and it doesn't pretend to be. but it has plenty of other charms from the ever changing scenery and terrain to the friendly and efficient support staff. i'll be back for sure. In short: Challenging pre-marathon tester - I can't believe anyone runs this just for fun? In full: Fantastic race, well organised, friendly etc, but don't attempt unless you are feeling on top form. It's great build up for a marathon, but watch the chalky/stony parts of the course, as opportunity to turn an ankle. Runners and marshals were friendly. I would definitely run again. In short: Definately a good one to do if you're training for an autumn marathon. In full: Definately not for the faint-hearted. You do need to be in shape for this one; it makes the Burnham Beeches half seem like a sunday school outing! Your efforts will be rewarded tho' with stunning scenery, a challenging course and a well-organised, well-marshelled event. (although a few distance markers...say every 5 km...would have helped! Thanks and hope to see you next year! Date of review: September 1, 2004
