In short: Some good, some poor In full: The course measuring mistake was not acceptable for a race this expensive but at least they've held their hands up and apologised. Baggage area understaffed, totally pointless near empty goody bag but many plusses as well. Date of review: February 20, 2012
In short: Could have been better In full: Not the best organisation at the start. Could have done with a bit more signposting. Course offered plenty of viewing / cheering spots for my family support. Lucozade and banana at the end might as well have been placed in the bag. I think that some people were so disheartened with the 'bag of two leaflets' that they didn't carry on to collect them. Distance mess-up was annoying but at least they've dealt with it.
In short: The good, the bad and the ridiculous In full: Should have been, could have been a great race. Ideal conditions, nice course, good support in places, expensive but happy to support the charity organising it. All turned a bit sour though with the extra 0.4 of a mile. Goody bag? what goody bag I didn't see one. 200 mile round trip to compete. Next year? Hmmm dont think so
In short: Really enjoyable race, and dealt with mistakes very well In full: I did this race for the 2nd time this year, and it really does have a lot going for it.
I found the organisation very good, the start was a little bit crowded due to where one of the many banks of portaloos were placed, but is was a very minor niggle for me. Once we had started, the course is fabulous, the crowd support and volunteer support is outstanding, and apart from the error with the distance this year, I personally think it would be hard to fault.
I will definitely plan to be back next year, and I think the organisers deserve a lot of credit and kudos for how they have dealt with the mistake made on the cone placement.... Date of review: February 20, 2012
In short: Fun run In full: Great weather, great volunteer supporters, good course. I was really confused whilst running that my gps tracked me as having run further than the markers which was off-putting on the run. What a shame that the distance was mis- calculated. I'm sure my pricey race fee paid for the basics to be correct. The lack of t shirt at the end was poor. Bottlenecks twice in the race need to be looked at - in the 2 hr group I was in we were politely trying to find space without tripping anyone over. I can see why some reviews are so negative. I really enjoyed the run but the farce of the distance was really annoying as I put so much effort into breaking my 2h target - my timing was 2.00.37 ...they think...as a guess...maybe! I think I'll look at an alternative for next year. Date of review: February 20, 2012
In short: A mixed bag. In full: Lovely medal, but otherwise rubbish 'goody bag'. People on the drinks stations did a great job, and were also encouraging which was nice. Definate potential for a pb I think as the course was very flat and the crowd thinned out quickly meaning no problems with other runners despite the numbers. (I didn't realise there had been a problem with the distance till I came on here, but it does make me feel slightly better about my time!) Would do it again. Date of review: February 20, 2012
In short: Shame about the distance error but a great day just the same In full: Well documented error on the race distance which has obviously marred the event for many runners. I feel sorry for them if they were on for a PB or if it was their first/last half marathon. However, for those of us that just enjoy the run for a "Day out" it was a great event. From the park and ride, to the lovely sea view course and fantastic supportive crowd I thouroughly enjoyed the day. My negative is really the general state of the road surface in the "town" section of the course which is a reflection of the Council rather than the race organiser. Would I do it again? I`ll have to, just to see what I could have done! ;-) Date of review: February 20, 2012
In short: VERY POOR COMPARED TO PREVIOUS RACES. FAR INFERIOR TO BRIGHTON MARATHON In full: Typical good atmosphere at the start but like all the others in the area where I was we unable to see where the warm-up lady was operating from! The course was fine as were the fantastic volunteers who gave out drinks. As usual there were quite a few locals to cheer on all the runners who came in all shapes, ages and sizes. I thought the mile markers were adequate and located in fairly good positions. But and a big BUT was the very poor finish. I have always collected a useful cotton T shirt at the end of this race and actualluy needed one this year as I did chill down rapidly with the wind. Thanks to the chap dishing out the foil wraps. The goodie bag was a complete waste of time. Sorry to say this will probably be my last Beacon Half and in February 2013 I'll be looking to run a training half Marathon at another venue. In short: Very enjoyable despite distance issue In full: Great weather, atmosphere and support. Liked the fact that the small uphill was done early in the race. Shame about it being over long but the fact that I had thought I had fallen behind schedule spurred me on to a good time. Date of review: February 20, 2012
In short: Organisers have adjusted times In full: Well done to the Organisers for sorting this one out and adjusting the times. You can see there message and new times here http://brightonhalfmarathon.com/# I must admit I still think I will see what happens next year before committing to do this one again but hats off to them for the quick turnaround when I'm sure they thought they'd all be at work and not dealing with this.
