In short: hard, hilly but grat views on a clear day In full: I did the half so it was only half as hilly as people who completed the full course who have my utmost respect - maybe next year or the year after? I knew most of the course from a 6-7 year period of employment at the Norwich Union site some 10 years ago, when a large group of us enjoyed daily lunchtime runs. No danger of getting lost but I can appreciate others may have had problems. Unfortunately it was a cloudy day and devils dyke looked like it was covered in mist from afar. The tracks were as rutted and stony as I remebered, making choice of path difficult. The hills were arduous, and my only mishap was to nearly run into a mountain biker coming in the oppposite direction, whilst I watched the path. Our mutual fault but I wish she had called out, bikes are near to silent. Four feed stations were welcome with water and I felt sufficient marshals were available to direct you. The last climb to Cissbury was hard but achievable, after 25 miles I'm not so sure. The finish was a welcome sight and well equipped. Date of review: May 14, 2007

In short: Does exactly what it says on the tin - "The Tough One" // "Go The Extra Mile"! In full: Third consecutive year for me so it obviously appeals to me. There's is no doubt that this is o ne of the most challenging marathons out there with some big climbs (x4), some rough terrain (bone-hard ground and stones/rocks/hollows), which mainly influenced my beginner-friendliness rating. This will test even the most experienced marathon runner and is still quite an achievement to finish.
The nature of this course does make it logistically difficult to fully-marshal and mark it but the organisers put in alot of hard work to achieve this in the main- I take the point that a group of runners took an unintended diversion early on (and I was amongst that group), and there was further uncertainty c.25 miles but I was fortunate to catch sight of someone in the distance and so guessed correctly. A little fine-tuning will rectify these aspects. However, I do find it amazing at the number of calls for mile-markers. With alot of this course on public footpaths, and its purity as an offroad event, littering the countryside with unnecessary signage, and pandering to those wishing to record split times - will take something away from this event. Some checkpoints provided a compromise, but I personally prefer the uncertainty even if it means that I finish as a shambolic wreck (which I did).
The checkpoints were fabulous with generous helpings of drink and food, the marshals/helpers were the nicist and most genuine people you would wish to meet.
A proper finishing straight, warm applause, a handshake from the Mayor, and a lovely medal capped the day off favourably.
Thanks again to Worthing Rotary Club and everyone else involved. See you in 2008. Date of review: May 13, 2007

In short: Beautiful scenery to take the mind off the hills!! In full: A lovely, if very tough, course, with challenging hills and terrain. The organisation was great in terms of the aid stations and friendliness of marshalls. Managed to get lost near the end, some more directions would have been helpful. Overall a great race. In short: The hills hurt!!! In full: Was doing - steady 10 min miles, until around 18/19 miles when the hills got too much and had to walk most of the rest of the ups. Marshals were very supportive and good humored which was definitely needed. Really enjoyed as my first marathon (ultra?), see how the hill training goes as to whether I do it next year though! In short: hard course and what a wind good job i am 83kgs In full: i am new to off road/trail running and could have done with some mile marker or a precise location of aid/food stations as without a GPS/Distance watch its a long way running blind.also runners should not be allowed to run with thier dog as this is not only annoying but dangerous and runners who throw gels etc away on course should be reported and disqualified as its unacceptable and i saw several runners doing this and they ignored my request to stop Date of review: May 8, 2007

In short: Beautiful but extremely tough course In full: This course was the toughest but also one of the most enjoyable that I have encountered. The hills were huge and just kept on coming.... It was my first off-road marathon and up until about 7 miles I was running well, placed somewhere in the top 20-30. Then along with about five others (including at that point-the 2nd placed woman) we went off course just before the river crossing. By the time we got back on course we were way back in the field. It was soul destroying to be at the bottom of a long 700ft climb and see all these runners that were behind me now strung out ahead of me. I tried to make up some places but eventually I settled down to a slower pace which I managed to maintain to the end. That is my only complaint on what otherwise was a well organised event.
The course was beautiful and the views from the hilltops were amazing.
The challenge was increased by a strong wind in parts as well as uneven ground. I stubbed my toe on a large loose stone at about 20 miles which was then really painful on the last downhill section.
Thanks to all of the marshalls along the route. I never realised how nourishing a digestive biscuit could be!
Also thanks to the Mayor of Worthing for coming to hand out the medals at the finish line. Nice touch!
