In short: My Last Time In full: As someone who runs in the Great Park on a regular basis you'd think that I'd know better by now wouldn't you, but I still entered. I know to cycle to the start to avoid the annual car park and road chaos, I know there are never enough toilets, and I know the drink stations aren't regular enough because it's always a boiling hot day, and I know you get nothing at the end (got to make profits somewhere). I entered in the hope it would be a cool day, but it wasn't, and I should have stayed at home. This race could be so much better, and running it in the morning would be the best change of all, then I might think about it again, but for now that was my last time. In short: Could be so much better. In full: For a quite expensive race (with no road closures) this should be so much better. Lack of (competant & trained) car park marshalls caused major problems both getting in & out of the event.
Very scenic route with penty of suppport at the start & finish but there seemed to me a very long section in the middle with no water station.
A fun-sized Mars at the end suggests that not much of the 20 odd quid entry fee is given back to the runners.
In short: Hilly and hot! In full: This was my second half marathon and I beat my time ( only by a minute! ) but was very pleased considering the weather and those hills compared to the flat run of silverstone. Would have liked more water stops and leaving the car park at the end was a complete nightmare but really enjoyed the day - scenary was stunning Date of review: September 28, 2009
In short: Another hot day, lovely for running at 10am but started at 1pm daft time. Consequently used it as a training run. Undulating another word for hilly, up one then another, but good support and lovely scenery! Need more water stops. In full: Another hot day, lovely for running at 10am but started at 1pm daft time. Consequently used it as a training run. Undulating another word for hilly, up one then another, but good support and lovely scenery! Need more water stops, especially on the 2nd loop. Would have been much better if an earlier start than 1pm much too hot at that time and if they have made the course easier goodness knows what it was like before. Hill after hill, not one for the faint hearted and far too hot!! Date of review: September 28, 2009
In short: first h/m think i chose the wrong place, wrong day those hills & heat In full: Wow what can I say hard work, tip to anyone thinking of doing this as a first h/m i think a flatter course would be better and not when it could bo so blinking hot 1pm start is shocking, to suit all runners I think 3pm would be better, i too was a little disgruntled with the fun size mars bar and getting out of the carpark was ppor organisation the traffic marshalls were stood there looking bemused. In short: Traffic, car park, start time = awful In full: This run would be beautiful starting with half as many competitors a few weeks later in the year with a 10am start and a decent car parking solution. And a full size mars bar at the end. And no roadworks on the M4. Race booklet says aim to get there 1 hour before, I say more like 2 and you might actually make the start! One where the enjoyment is definitely reserved for the locals... Date of review: September 27, 2009
In short: Longer to get out of the yellow car park than run the race. In full: Tough course, but that's ok, not my best time, not my worst either, rough with the smooth. The time to get out the car park afterwards was just unacceptable and will stop me ever doing the race again or recommending it to anyone. Date of review: September 27, 2009
In short: Mad dogs and enlishmen In full: Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the mid-day sun. Is that what they say?.. Well there were also plenty of women out on the course today and we all suffered in the heat of the glorious sunshine. Lovely I should imagine for the spectators, but really gruelling for the runners. I agree with all the other comments, why can’t we run in the morning?.. All I wanted at the end was a full-sized mars bar and maybe a bowl of pasta, just something to replenish all those burnt calories and not too bad for the waist line, but all there was on offer was a burger and other fast food. Not for me thanks. Very expensive race, but gorgeous scenery. Date of review: September 27, 2009
In short: Too hot and too hilly for me! In full: I last did this in 2002 as my first ever half-marathon and remember having a really terrible time due to the heat and the hills - today was de-ja-vu although I did complete it 20 minutes quicker this year (good) it was still my slowest half time for 2 years (bad)!
The 1pm start is a real killer (I didn't realise when I signed up) and for some reason this particular September Sunday is often VERY hot.
I didn't think there were enough toilets (classily I headed back to the car park and ducked between some cars because I didn't have time to wait!), or enough water on the way round (frequency or quantity) and I was stunned there was no goody bag (I know that's not what it's all about, but......) .
It's a shame because it is a lovely location, great for spectators but I don't think I will back. Maybe in another 7 years!
