In short: Worth the trip... In full: First time at Silverstone and I enjoyed the day...
After a 4 wk layoff in my training due to shin splints for the London Marathon it was good to get back to running. I was running in Superman fancy dress so started from the back (i think i was last over the line - lol), so I wouldn't get in the way of other runners. I ran for 5mins and walked for 1min and still managed to come in the 4000's lol... And I beat batman! Glad to say i had no problems from the shin-splints or any unwanted chaffing from the costume - only problem was a sun burnt head!!! So Silverstone - i'm into gp so i loved the course, i kept getting the urge to cut the corners and shout that's what Lewis does!!! The course is flat so defo PB potential for those seeking that - will attempt it again next year and see how i get on. Great race in the build up to London - here we go.... In short: Boring, boring, boring. In full: I went off this race when the first set of ladies' loos were shut. It went downhill from there - though sadly, not literally. High points (no pun intended) were the two, barely perceptible, inclines. Otherwise a terminally flat and featureless terrain. A Personal Worst! On the plus side - Alice's mum, just down the road from Silverstone village, cooked us a brilliant tea. Beef stew, veg, meringue, coffee and walnut cake, brownies....Now that was worth a 200+ mile round journey.. Date of review: March 18, 2009
In short: Nice to run on the track In full: No problems getting into the car park, nightmare getting out (but I'm laughing at the comments saying that's why the GP has gone to Donington - have you ever tried to get out of a car park there?).
For me, the main point of doing it was to race on the track, I guess if that doesn't interest you too much then you might prefer to do a different race. Despite some comments on here I found the marshals to be really encouraging, and it was also nice to get encouragement from the spectators. Was slightly annoyed at one (spectator) that walked into my path, causing me to run into another runner, apologies if that was you.
The medal is nice, the goody bag was let down by the T-shirt. It would have been nice to wear it the next day, but I take a girl's small, not a bloke's extra large size. Date of review: March 18, 2009
In short: For first timers, great preparation for the full London experience to come. In full: Get used to, jostling for position at the mass start, tripping over slower runners blocking your way, being bashed by faster runners trying to overtake you.... Fantastically slick operation, apart from the traffic and parking issues, but thats just Silverstone and why the British GP has gone to Donnington. PB potential if you can fight your way to the front of the start. Otherwise experience the frustrations of getting stuck behind slower runners and being unable to get past because of he sheer weight of numbers. It will drive you mad, but mentally you'll be prepared for London. Race probably doesn't get scored as high as it deserves and takes more undeserved stick than most. Deserves bonus marks for celeb spotting potential. There are so many C-listers it feels like being in an episode of Emmerdale. I'm being slightly bitter as I was slower than Vicky Binns from coronation Street! Date of review: March 18, 2009
In short: Not very exciting but great for a PB In full: I wasn't expecting the race to be particularly interesting, and it wasn't. But I actually liked the fact you could see runners everywhere you looked and it made the course feel shorter to see where you were going. I ran my second best time so very pleased. Unfortunately the fun of the run was ruined by the long wait to get out of the car park. Had stiffened up horribly after sitting in the car waiting to get out for more than an hour. In short: Boring course, really difficult to motivate yourself. My slowest half! In full: The flattest and slowest half I have ever done!! Found the route incredibly boring and was very demotivating being able to see other runners miles ahead of you, or turning back towards you. My garmin measured the route as 13.35 miles. Maybe 13.1 is if you go sharp on the corners? Sun didn't help and was desperate for water by the time I reached teh firsts top. Start line too crowded and un-organised. Date of review: March 18, 2009
In short: Harder than expected In full: Having made an appalling effort at running the Reading half-marathon a few years ago, since my husband is training for a marathon I thought I'd have another go at a half. I chose Silverstone this time for novelty value. Arrived in good time and marshalling into carparks was very good. Less organised on exit with long waits. After the initial lap of the track the novelty of the location wore off for me. I didn't feel there was any decent crowd support until 10miles (too late to save my time)and the marshalls weren't very encouraging. There were some deceptive inclines that made it a challenging course and that, combined with my lack of competitive spirit and lovely weather made for a slower time than I'd expected. Glad I did it though and would recommend giving it a try. Why so much fuss over the big t-shirt? It was never going to be this season's fashion must have! Date of review: March 18, 2009
In short: Strangely tiring for what should have been a fast course, the idea of Silverstone is good but reality was boring In full: Organisation good, but the delayed start a pain (it was amusing that so many males needed a pre-race wee). Course was boring which was a let-down, also it was tough - perhaps due to higher temp than recent. Goody bag was good and T-shirt was XL but not a bad fit for a M person. Drinks were fine but wastefull since who needs 500ml? Not sure I'd it again. Date of review: March 18, 2009
In short: T shirt fits, perfect except the jobsworth marshall in the carpark In full: I had a great day, fantastic atmosphere, good support, another pb and a great goody bag with a tshirt that for the first time ever almost fits me. (Lots of people slating the t shirts but they are normally made to fit you small people, today was our turn). Only real downside was the car park and it wasn't the traffic, I dont mind queing but the jobsworth marshall wouldnt let anyone out!!! Nutter! Date of review: March 17, 2009
In short: not great In full: I was really looking forward to this race, but was quite disappointed on several accounts. Firstly the delayed start was frustrating, then parts of the route were almost dangerous as I saw several people fall over waist height cones placed to mark the route, this really reduced my enjoyment as I felt i had to run looking down. Then there was no water at the end! plus a huge t-shirt and an hour to get out of the car park!! Date of review: March 17, 2009
