In short: Leave the stopwatch at home In full: Some races you run for the scenery, others for PB's but this is purely for the atmosphere. Don't take part if you want a pb or like running on your own. This event is absolutely amazing as long as you go into it knowing that it will be very congested and that you are taking part purely because the atmosphere is fantastic. When the Red Arrows fly overhead as you run over Tyne Bridge, running just doesn't get any better. Having the Red Arrows also fly over at the start and Emma Egging start the race I thought was very fitting on this occasion and particularly moving. Date of review: September 19, 2011

In short: An event where the best in the world lead the best club runners and the fancy dressed masses raising money for stuff they care about. Amazing. In full: My first Great North Run (despite living a mile from the start for 25 years) and it was awe-inspiring. Some runners are doing it knowing it will be a struggle, but raising money urges them on, as does a crowd who will you on to the finish -especially when your leg seizes a mile from the line! And for a course that has a net decrease in altitude, I can't remember that many descents apart from the vicious at the end that finished off my leg! Date of review: September 19, 2011

In short: Absolutely amazing event! In full: My first great north run and what an amazing event! I absolutely loved it from start to finish. The atmosphere was fantastic throughout- so much so that I got to the 5 mile point without even realising I'd ran that far! I was blown away by the generosity of the crowds and touched by the red arrows displays. Brilliant organisation for so many people- just disappointed it's all over now and can't wait to do it again!!! Date of review: September 19, 2011

In short: Excellent race, great weekend all round. In full: Superb atmosphere and great support all the way along the course. The warm up was fun at the start. It was lovely to see the Red Arrows too. Only thing to request is that there are signs along the course to ask walkers to move to the side. Otherwise it was brilliant - definately back next year for second go. Date of review: September 19, 2011
