In short: Some poor organisation let it down In full: The bad:
Too early a start, so public transport can't be used to get there.
Not enough toilets at the start & confusing information about how to actually get into the starting position.
Stupid bottleneck about 30 secs into the race which brought everyone to a standstill.
No warning of water stops, and not enough people to hand them out.
The shuffling queue at the end of the race to collect your foil blanket. After running 13 miles the last thing you want to do is come to a screeching halt. I was lucky to not have to queue to get over the finish line though!
On a positive note, great goody bag, great support all round the route and a nice easy going route, apart from some unwelcome hills between miles 10 & 12! I may or may not be back year dependent on the race start time and if the course has changed in order to eliminate all those bottleneck issues. Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: An experience I won't be repeating until much better organised In full: Unfortunately I have to echo many of the negative reviews here. Such a shame, but I would advise: a) the organisers to go and see how other races are managed before putting on another calamity
b) until things are improved for runners to save their money and enter a different race
Given how many other brill, well run, and enjoyable HMs are local (Cov, Kenilworth, Stratford) let alone nationally why bother with the hassle of this one? It seems to me that the organisers have been too intent on increasing numbers and fiddling with the route when what they actually need to do is get the basics right.
Us runners vote with our feet you know!!! I won't be back. Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: Congestion issues need to be sorted!!!!!!!!!!! In full: Organisation at start and finish was terrible, which is a shame as the lessons were not learned from last years start. Timing pens need to be policed as there were far too many fun runners at the front. I passed a couple of runners who were walking at the 1 mile stage!!!???? A much better course this year, and if you only didn't have to dodge and weave for the first 5 miles then it has the potential to provide you with a PB. Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: It was ashame you had to wait for a few minutes before you could cross the finish In full: The begining was all jammed, you had to que to cross the line but the middle was all good :-) Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: Great medal. Big Hills. Lots of People In full: First half-marathon so the great people around us made the start less stressful. Couldn't get to proper start area so was one of those people that others needed to run around. Needed runners walkway to get to proper start area which would have made marshalling easier. Great warm-up - thanks Great to see parts of Brum that I wouldn't normally - those who wanted a really fast time should maybe think about running round a track instead. Hills were big and never ending especially when turning the corner. Most of the runners great, fab atmosphere can't wait to do next year Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: good for a p.b. In full: has the potential to be up there with the great city half marathons.great support from the people of birmingham all the way.however first of all car parks not clearly sign posted so ended up parking god nows where, but not the N.I.A. as intended.secondly the start was chaotic nothing clearly signed ,i was lucky and started near front so missed all the bottle necks at start and finish but do feel sorry for all those who got caught up and ruined there race. In short: Terrible organisation In full: I agree with the majority of comments made already. I spent the first 5 miles weaving, pushing past the slower runners and in the end I just ran a comfortable/training pace as I wasn't going to be on target to try and get a PB. I am surprised there weren't a lot of injuries as you weren't made aware of road bollards etc which when running in huge crowds can cause last second jumping out of way .... I agree with the steeplechase comment (plyometric training came in handy!)
Direction/advice really should be taken from Running clubs. They have experience in this field. I may do this again once I start reading more positive comments in the next couple of years. Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: Enjoyable Run, chaotic start In full: I enjoyed the race itself as i got a new PB. At 08:45 i attempted to make my way to my pen (blue) from centenary sqaure having to the warm up, i couldn't get anywhere near my start pen due to crowds of runners and spectators on broad st, runners were understandably jumping the barriers to get to the start line as it was now 08:58, i saw a gap and ended up starting in the green positions. As soon as i crossed the start line, we came to a grounding halt as everyone tried to squeeze through a tiny space.
Other than this, i enjoyed the route, big shout to the lady on Lincoln Road (just before 10 mile marker) blasting out dance tunes on her lawn, made me smile.
Luckily i didn't get caught up in the finish line problems but i would have been mightly peed off if i had.
I'd do it again as it's my home city but the organisers really need to think about the start/finish area more carefully, why not open up both sides of broad street?? Date of review: October 25, 2010
In short: Chaotic, dangerous and badly organised In full: I think most people have succinctly summed up the problems with this race so will not rant on too much (believe me I could!). One question: Why did there seem to be more marshalling in the NIA than there was for the race?! Date of review: October 25, 2010
In full: Well done runners who have braved the freezing weather and done a good deed for charity. This is just the 3rd time B'ham have organized a H/M.Please let's give them a chance to improve esp the organizational side of things.I would like to give the organizers a chance and I'm willing to do this again next year which will be my 4th.For all the Brummie runners jst like me,let's give the organizers a chance to improve by supporting them again next year.If things wont change, then its time to ponder the future of the B'ham H/M Date of review: October 25, 2010
