In short: Mud and more mud - loved it!!! In full: This was my 1st half marathon and the mud made it a lot harder than I was expecting. Had a really good time though and will definitely be doing it again next year. It has given me the bug also and I am already booking my next race. Thanks to all involved!!!

In short: A 26 mile mud-fest In full: really slick signage and marshalling, and a great route. Nice to do a race that doesn't end up where you started. For an off-road race, there were very few hold ups, and no bottlenecks. Date of review: October 5, 2008

In short: I'd like to meet anyone who thought it was easy In full: The mile markers were clear, the route was well signed and the marshals were just great. The MUD was an extra special slippy slidey kind and made some sections very excitingly uncertain underfoot. T-shirt a very welcome alternative to a medal. I also bought the optional £15 technical long sleeve and it looks set to be a favourite for winter running. Date of review: October 5, 2008

In short: Why do the organisers insist on ruining a potentially decent marathon? In full: Marathon runners suffer because the Half marathon is timed to cause maximum congestion, and the organisers don't seem to think there is anything wrong with making tired marathon runners weave in an out of slower half marathon runners for 13 miles. Ok if you are very fast, or very slow. Very frustrating otherwise. Pity, because if the organisers changed this one thing it would be a decent race. Date of review: February 10, 2008

In short: Why the queues ? Start/registration and at the finish ?? In full: Expensive at £17 for a trail marathon + busfare £4. Bused from finish to start, buses travelled in convoy, so we all arrived together - why ? The poster telling you where to queue were at knee level - so of course we could not see them, Q to register, Q for black sacg and tag.Route - well marshalled - 2nd half made tough in places as we tried to pass half marathoners in narrow places. However, after finishing and after asking I was told momentos in the school, so I went to the school and found another long long very slow moving Q - just what you need after completing a marathon - just one guy handing out medals and t-shirts - why ? This finally spoilt a good day - took an hour to get from the finish line to my car - parked within a 100 yarsd of the finish.... Nice event - but please sort out the Q's.

In short: Great race - just the odd over-officious organiser! In full: On the very positive side...
The marshalls were superb.
So were all the drinks stations.
And the team organising the parking and the bus transfers.
And the team sending out the race packs before the race.
All absolutely top notch - so thanks for your effort!
The race itself was also good stuff - like a few other reviewers I struggled overtaking half marathoners on some of the single paths in the last 10 miles, but for my first off road marathon, I didn't mind this at all.
The only downsides were: - The registration on the day - I guess this is necessary for safety reasons - but surely there could be a simpler way than making people queue up in line before the race? - handing out the tee shirts at the end - most of the helpers behind the desk were excellent, but the system was slow and one of the organisers was really being zealous with his book keeping - again it was unfortunate to make people stand in line for minutes at the end of the marathon. - the showers were freezing cold
If you're tempted to try an off-roader, then go for it! Date of review: October 15, 2007

In short: Good scenery, Marshall friendly, but overall organisation leave some room for improvement. In full: Good if your are very slow or very fast you won't be held up by all the half marathon runners that the organisers insist on starting just in time to make sure that you'll be forced to overtake them on slippery, narrow paths, just as you are getting really tired. In short: Excellent off road marathon! In full: This was my first marathon, and I thought it was very beginner friendly. Nice to have the half starting at mile 13 so we all finished together. Finishing in 4:40, I didn't get held up at stiles etc but there were still plenty of runners to chat to on the way round. Very friendly bunch! Very well organised, lots of water stations, good mile markers, plenty of friendly marshalls (thank you!) and clearly marked route - no chance of getting lost (which I was worried about being a slow runner!) Lovely lovely scenery, beautiful day, gently undulating hills... Great to have a point to point race. Only concern was the queue for the t-shirts and cold shower. Apart from that I would definitely do it again, and would recommend it to anyone. Also a great intro to trail running! Thank you to all the organisers - fantastic!! Date of review: October 8, 2007
