In short: Great day - despite heat did a PB, beautiful scenery along coast to Crammond, thanks to marshalls for plenty of drink stations and support from the locals. Needs better map of course beforehand. In full: Picked this one convinced it wouldn't be hot in Scotland in June! Great marathon - has potential to be big one if organisation. Relay race entries probably help keep the event going at the moment, but if it becomes a major marathon then both can't happen at the same time as it would be too crowded. Loved the stretch along the coast with the slight sea breeze. Bit boring through the industrial estate at Leith but was offset by a beautiful finish. Better map of the course is needed with mile markers/public transport (like the FLM) to help spectators who don't know the area to know where to stand - my partner missed me several times! Agree a few bands would help keep the spirits up. Despite few minor grumbles thanks for the good organisation. Date of review: June 13, 2006
In short: Very hard race due to temperature, but plenty of fluids available. Very cramped at start in the "cattle pens" otherwise not a bad route ,my last marathon was 19 years ago and the distance is still as hard. Date of review: June 13, 2006
In short: Organisation wasn;t great, no replies to any queries sent in. In full: Very little first aid cover on the course, people were collasping on the side of the road due to the heat and weren't getting the attention they needed. The drinks situation wasn't great, and wasn't what was advertised, Water was supposed to have a sports cap, which was essential in thea heat so that you could carry the bottle with you, but no cap so people were taking a sip and then throwing away the bottle. Lucozade was supposed to be orange, but at times there was every flavour but, and I hadn't trained with the other flacours so was unwilling to try something new. The road surface is very bad and was full of holes and there were many open drains with no warning of them appearing, Marhsalls were ok, but they weren't giving out the correct information, one marshall after the 25 mile marker was telling everyone there was still three miles to go, this can be very sole disteroying if you didn't see the markers. Lastly I made the course nearer 27.5 miles, I felt it wss very long. I won't be doing this one again. Date of review: June 13, 2006
In short: Good first marathon for me, great support from the spectators, and what was that about no water?! In full: Well this was my first marathon, entered after I got a guaranteed entry from failing to make the London Marathon ballots.
After all the reports of hot weather/not enough water I was worried that it could all go horribly wrong, but on race day it all went well (apart from cramps around mile 17 that I got over after a few miles...).
Great spectators cheering everyone on, it's hard to just walk by them, so good motivation to keep going. And the hosepipes on the last few miles were much appreciated - glad there wasn't a hosepipe ban :)
Marshalls and fluid supplies were good, I think there was more than originally planned.
Yeah the course is hilly/undulating but that's just a characteristic of Edinburgh (and also Glasgow if I remember right from past travels...). Just glad my training runs included hills :)
On the negative side, the warehouse areas were boring, it was good to get to the beach. There needs to be more toilets around, luckily for us guys there were many trees/bushes around.
Well, after all the press reports that this may be the last, I hope it's not. I'll be back again for the 2007 Edinburgh Marathon! Date of review: June 13, 2006
In short: Great experience for my first marathon In full: As a first time marathoner I don't have any other marathons to compare it too, but I thought the course was a good one -yes, there were some hills but not more than I get running at home and I loved the part of the route by the sea, and great to finish in the park. There was plenty of water and lucozade, the marshalls were friendly and the people supporting did just that really well. The only thing I would gripe about was the low number of toilets, which meant a lot of people still queuing just before the start and getting mixed up with the relay runners. I was pleased to finish within my target, now I know I can actually make it round that far maybe I'll come back again to try and improve ! In summary I enjoyed this very much and hope the race continues. Date of review: June 13, 2006
In short: Well marshalled on the day. Some organisational tweaks needed. Too hot!!! In full: A mixed course - start and finish superb, a bit dull in the middle. Mile markers seemed to be poorly measured (according to my Garmin). Hillier than you would suspect from viewing the 'course profile' on the website. Well marshalled and no complainte about the water/sports drink stations.
The relay race doesn't mix well with the marathon - every few miles you get barged out of the way by geezers on a mission.
Goodie bag was a joke (what was with the plastic soldier with parachute???). Nice medal, though.
Still, special for me as my first marathon. Fantastic finish by Arthur's seat. Date of review: June 12, 2006
In short: super marathon In full: Enjoyed this very much. It was hot but there were plenty of water and lucozade stations so no excuse for dehydrating. I can't believe reports in the Scotsman that 2500 people didn't turn up for the race because of the heat - shocking. It a pity there was no timing mat at the halfway point. One or two mile markers (mile 11?) seemed out of place but apart from that it appeared well-organised to me. Fantastic finish (apart from the climb from Portobello beach!) in Holyrood Park. In short: Lovely city, great race and good atmosphere. Has potential to grow into big city marathon. Organisers seemed to respond well to hot weather - shame they couldn't flatten the last three miles! Date of review: June 12, 2006
In short: Route much better than last year In full: last year Edinburgh was my first marathon this one was my 2nd there was much improvement really enjoyed the start in princess street, the spectators were great and so were the marshalls Date of review: June 12, 2006
