In short: Nice day out In full: Overall I had a great day. Stopping for the odd blackberry was nice, spent much of the second half on my own and nearly got lost (a sharp right turn wasn't marked). Like others I found the downhill bits difficult but maybe I am too cautious? Date of review: August 21, 2006
In short: Excellent! If the scenery does not take your breath away the hills will! In full: I set of from Sheffield and I found Belper Rugby Club easily in less than an hour, arriving in plenty of time for registration.
After, checking out the course on the map and speaking to a couple of runners that I had met at a similar event two weeks earlier on the Dovedale Dipper, I made my way to the start.
The weather was perfect for the day. Cool and a bit of refreshing light rain here and there.
For me personally the challenge was the down hill sections of the course. Some people can really fly down those stretches but I found them really testing.
I love running through countryside and this run through the beauty of the Derwent Valley is a real cracker with spectacular views. One lap of a well marked route took us through farmers fields, bridle ways, footpaths, woods and little hamlets.
The marshals were very friendly and encouraging, especially a cyclist who encouraged me to dig deep over the last stretch of the race.
It was great come out from the trees and to see the finish in front of me. I crossed the finish line in 2:36. The cheers and the friendliness give the event a good atmosphere and memorable finale.
Chatted briefly to St Bernard from the Runner’s World Forum and then left for home managing to get home before some members of the family had managed to get out of bed!
Thanks to Belper RUFC and Belper Harriers and all the team for organising a great event.
Agh! Somehow, I forgot to pick up my free shirt I guess that gives me another good reason for coming back next year.
In short: this race is worth doing In full: very enjoyable race five of us got lost about two thirds of the way home too dehydrated and mentally not sharp cost me at least five places but these are the kind of races I live for scenic very challenging and good organization Date of review: September 10, 2005
