In short: Great idea, just a few organisational niggles. Boring in the middle In full: Generally good, and no malice intended when I say it could have been better organised. The route was great, the buses to/from the start/finish excellent and the marshalling excellent. An almighty screw up meant two faster "pens" left behind mine so loads of pushing and overtaking in the first few miles although it didn't really affect me personally. The cost was steep though the t-shirt and medal very good quality. It's a race that could do VERY well - even increase to 10 or 15,000 runners if they can get it right (and use both sides of the road). A guaranteed PB for a first-distance but I also beat a 12 year old PB for 15 miles! Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Flat, well organised, interesting distance, glad I did it. In full: Overall a very well organised race which I would do again as it's a challenging but also manageable distance. Especially impressed with the stewards and the folk helping at the water stations.
Finish was a bit of an anti climax - you seemed to turn the corner and suddenly you were done but that (and the long wait in the pens at the start) aside I thought it was a great debut. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: A great debut In full: Excellent road closures, flatish course with only mild undulations, good (albeit low volume) support, well marhsalled, quality long sleeved t-shirt (that wasn't adorned with sponsors names like usual t-shirts) and chunky medal.
Having to be in pens 30 minutes before the start was a bit much for an event of only approx 4000 runners. There seemed to be some issues with the number of toilets although I didn't really have any issues.
Overall, very impressed and hope it returns next year. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Overall enjoyed the race but the course was dull except for the part through Elvaston park which i thought was greatt. In full: As a good training run i thought the race was ideal but as a stand alone event it lacked a certain buzz and seemed to be missing the fun element of great races. The course was flat and the closed roads were well marshalled and i always felt safe out there. The pre race as already stated elsewhere was too drawn out and un-necessary and i also thought the finish lacked atmosphere. But when all is said and done, yes i'd do it again. In short: Nothing too special but would do it again In full: Overall, I liked the race and would do it again. My experience was that it was well organised and things went smoothly. The marshalls did a good job, I got the same bag back that I checked in (that's always good) and the goody bag was reasonable. Serious bling medal which is always good!
Two points regarding bodily functions:
- I think there will always be a tension between renting enough toilets and allowing everyone to go in the last 30 mins before a race (well, the last hour if you count the time in pens...). Difficult one for the organisers and it always seems to be a problem.
- what on earth did people think they were doing when urinating against the flats when waiting for the start? I cannot believe that anyone capable of entering a race would be stupid enough to pee up someone's house! I couldn't care less whether or not they needed to go - they shouldn't do it there. I'd have applauded if the police gave out notices.
I'd say that the event was pretty lacking in atmosphere at the start but people were pretty friendly on the way around. Scenery was OK - a bit towards the dull side but I've had worse. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Why so early at the start? In full: Liked the route to be honest and that it wasn't too hilly at all and gradual uphill bits were manageable. My only problesm were with the start - it was freezing having to wait for 30 mins, then walk down the road to wait further 15 mins before starting.
I would also ask how, when you have the numbers confirmed for entry, that the carb pouches ran out so that hardly any of the guys towards the back had that to help them to the end? I saw a few unopened on the floor as I ran on. c'mon guys - you really need to think of your fellow runners!
Please could we have a better finish, bit of an anti-climax as just as go into the park...it finishes. Besides, if it was further into the park - I wouldn't have to then walk so far to the car park!
Otherwise, good support and thanks go out to the marshalls and people of Notts/Derby - wasn't the warmest of days by any means but everyone's support was very much needed for a injured back-marker like me yesterday! Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Great event, well organised with nice medal and goody bag In full: Could have done with more toilets at the start (long queues as start pens closing) but other than that and getting quite cold waiting for the start I loved this race! Great distance and great turnout, nice support from the volunteers and locals Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Very promising debut In full: I enjoyed this run. Yes the early scenery was a bit drab and waiting for ths start was not much fun. If the race does grow more work will need to be done to the start but I will be back.
I found the enthusiastic support by marshalls and spectators was spot on. I thought the course was fine and liked running through the wood was a nice change to what I thought was a road run.
I was a bit confused that the marshalls I asked could not give directions for where the shuttle buses were leaving from. The buses were good through. Date of review: March 15, 2010
