In short: needs tweaking, but overall a good race with a decent crowd In full: pro s: it is a good distance. with the amount of road closures etc fine organistaion. v good support from stewards and spectators. better than people suggest on here, not sure what they expect, seriously i've done plenty of races where its just been 1 man and his dog.standing around watching stinky strangers run past prob isnt that much fun, show some grattitude!!! beer tent at the end, immediate post race beer(s), love it! con s: the start needs some work (toilets!) and the finishing straight was nt the best (pretty rubbish) for the people watching. easily fixed though. In short: Good in parts In full: Let's start with the good. The course was well marked, well marshalled, and the drinks stations were really well organised and stocked. I liked the bottled water and energy drinks. I really liked the distinctive Km markers with the fluttering ribbons, I spotted every one of them easily. Now the not so good. Like everyone else, I struggled with standing around for an hour before the start. I always need a pee, but didn't want to join the masses peeing against someone's house wall or wait in the long queue for the 2 portaloos near the start. Felt sorry for the women as it's harder for them to nip behind a bush along the route. The course is net uphill (not by much I know) and into the prevailing wind, and a long straight stretch into a cold wind dampened my spirits. The strange little loop around some cones just before Elvaston park didn't help morale either. The organisers asked for feedback on their website survey. I wish I hadn't filled that in as it's all focussed around how much money you spend in the local economy or on their merchandise. There were some good efforts to make this a good race, but I wasn't keen on the over commercialisation.
Will I be back? Not sure. I'd like to get a better time, and the distance is interesting, so maybe. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Nice race, not too good before the start, though In full: Pleasant enough race. A good distance, good challenge and large and fast enough to be a worthwhile day out.
My major gripe, like many here, was related to the pre-race. Having travelled to the race from somewhere near enough to make the journey without needing a hotel, but too far to be considered local, I relied on the timetable printed in the race information to help me plan my morning (I got up at 4.30 for the race!). To ignore the published timetable and rush people - when the last shuttle bus hasn't even arrived - then leave folk shivering for fifty minutes because you've rushed everyone to get bags on trucks, get into pens etc made for a shambolic feel to the beginning of the race. This was a shame, because I really enjoyed the race - once I got going.
And what's the point of an organised warmup an hour before the start of a race? Any benefit of the warmup is surely gone by the start if that's the sort of delay.
In short: Well worth the trip to the Midlands. In full: A good day out and a good atmosphere between the runners and the marshalls. Well supported in the towns. Got to be some gripes as ever though, the queues for the loos were ridiculous. The T-shirt was very poor indeed, non-technical and just looked cheap, the organisers missed out on a chance of good publicity here as it was the first kilomathon ever. I can't see many people wearing this top in training. Rest of the goody bag was impresive though. Date of review: March 14, 2010
In short: Great to be part of the First.. In full: It was regimented but I could see why, but that aside it was very well organised, even the personal touch of a text message at the end. Surely the point of this event is that it was the 1st and this will grow as will the crowds... This was great as the step up from a half marathon and a tester for pre marathon. Hope this continues next year. Date of review: March 14, 2010
In short: Where to start In full: Some good and bad points to this race. The good - marshalls were lovely, some of the roads were good to run on (nice and wide), and the woods were nice to run through. I also like the idea of running city to city. The bad - For the race itself, too long in the pens (way too long), finish area too spread out to generate a real atmosphere. Outside of the race another issue is parking! Contrary to the fyler in my pack (stating I had left it till last minute!) I had planned (in advance) to park at showcase, and was let down by the last minute closure of this option!! Equally at the end of the race it was quite a walk back to buses and parking. I've just tried leaving feedback on the kilomathon site, but found this very difficult, having to answer questions such as my salary etc before I could leave feedback. I'm sorry but this is unnecessary and 'over-managed', much like the start of the race with the commentator demanding we 'go the baggage trucks', 'go to the pens' etc. Consequently I wont be doing this race again. I dont want to be involved in organisations that try to force personal details from me. Especially as there are no disclaimers about what will happen to such data! Be warned, if you use the kilomathon site you may be opening yourself up to all sorts of advertising being sent your way! Date of review: March 14, 2010
In short: Decent event - and the distance suited me well. Will definitely do it again In full: It was nice to be there at the first. I know the area so didn't feel at all let down by the lack of stupendous scenery. The course is fast and the distance was perfect for me. Organization was good, the shuttle bus in particular worked well - maybe I was lucky but I hooped straight on one at the beginning and the end. I do agree that we were kept standing around a bit longer than necessary at the start - longer, for example, than at the Robin Hood which has far more entrants. I am less inclined to agree regarding the cost. The medal and goody bag were both very good and there were quite a lot of roads which needed closing/careful marshalling. In short: Good to be part of the first ever - but no more than that In full: I think I agree with all other posts todate that the time from dropping your bags to racetime was far to long in a fairly open start area. Nice race but along way off the bigger types for atmosphere but maybe time will improve this. The course was fine mostly flat but lacked scenery. Date of review: March 14, 2010
