In short: Its was alright but the course was quite dull..... In full: I experienced no organisational problems but i just thought the course was boring. I'd do it again but only because i live in Nottingham. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Good in parts In full: One of my least enjoyable races, but that may be me rather than the race. First the good. I liked the Km markers which were distinctively marked with red streamers helping me to spot each one from a distance. The drinks stations were really well organised - I liked the bottled water and the energy drinks. The route was well signposted and marshalled. Now the downside. I didn't like standing around for an hour at the start, especially as I always need a wee as close to the start as I can manage. I didn't fancy joining those who were peeing against a house wall near the start line, or joining the long queue for the 2 portaloos. I felt sorry for the women who found it harder to find a bush to hide behind along the route. The long straight road against the wind was tough, and I didn't enjoy the strange out and back round the cones near the entrance to Elvaston park. Got an email from Kilomathon asking to fill in their online survey, so I did. It's all centred around how much money you spend in the area or on their merchandise. The whole thing feels like a money making exercise rather than the friendlier club races. I suppose it's good preparation for London. Will I be back? Not the way I'm feeling now, but I may change my mind later. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Mostly good - few wrinkles - needed more atmosphere In full: Well organised - good marshalling - well stocked water stations (but what was the point of energy drinks on the last one?). Feel a bit churlish critising but as with others didn't see the point of the delays and waiting about at the start - just got cold. The route was flat and a bit dull and felt there was no real buzz - maybe needs to bed in for a couple of years and build some local support. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Great new race - definitely worth it!! In full: Yes there were some bad points, but show me a race where there aren't any! This is a brand new race and the great bits far far outweigh the bad bits in my opinion. So.... Good: Great medal, fab tshirt - I plan to wear mine all the time not just for training so I am pleased it isnt a technical one. Long sleeved makes a nice change. Fantastic goody bag - I ate most of the contents pretty quickly. Excellent km marker signs. Excellent water/drinks stations - esp the vaseline bit! Good route (yes I have done prettier runs) but perfect terrain and profile for a long marathon build up. Good location in the country. I saw runners from wetherby to sussex. Transport and parking - faultless. Bad: TOILETS!!!!!! WE NEED MORE PLEASE. I wasted 5 mins on a queue for the loo, my sister wasted 8 mins. Would also prefer a speedier bag collection area. Bless the cadets for trying and I certainly appreciated their dedication but i was a bit chilly waiting for 25mins for my bag!! All in all - fantastic though. Will be back! In short: Good race, good distance, good organisation - I'm sure they can learn and improve next year In full: Very well organised in general, obviously they had to work with the location and what roads could and couldn't be closed and as such this resulted in a situation of being filed down to the pens and a subsequent wait for the start. Hopefully if this becomes an annual event at this location they can work on improving this element. The course was well marshalled, good distance markers and plenty of water stations. I think they could have made more of the end by allowing the runners to run in and around the park to a finish line, would be better for spectators also. I actually thought that was what was going to happen and was surprised to see the finish line so close. All in all a good event that I hope will be repeated next year, with some minor tweaks this could become a really good warm up event for the spring marathons. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: needs tweaking, but overall a good race with a decent crowd In full: pro s: it is a good distance. with the amount of road closures etc fine organistaion. v good support from stewards and spectators. better than people suggest on here, not sure what they expect, seriously i've done plenty of races where its just been 1 man and his dog.standing around watching stinky strangers run past prob isnt that much fun, show some grattitude!!! beer tent at the end, immediate post race beer(s), love it! con s: the start needs some work (toilets!) and the finishing straight was nt the best (pretty rubbish) for the people watching. easily fixed though. In short: Good in parts In full: Let's start with the good. The course was well marked, well marshalled, and the drinks stations were really well organised and stocked. I liked the bottled water and energy drinks. I really liked the distinctive Km markers with the fluttering ribbons, I spotted every one of them easily. Now the not so good. Like everyone else, I struggled with standing around for an hour before the start. I always need a pee, but didn't want to join the masses peeing against someone's house wall or wait in the long queue for the 2 portaloos near the start. Felt sorry for the women as it's harder for them to nip behind a bush along the route. The course is net uphill (not by much I know) and into the prevailing wind, and a long straight stretch into a cold wind dampened my spirits. The strange little loop around some cones just before Elvaston park didn't help morale either. The organisers asked for feedback on their website survey. I wish I hadn't filled that in as it's all focussed around how much money you spend in the local economy or on their merchandise. There were some good efforts to make this a good race, but I wasn't keen on the over commercialisation.
Will I be back? Not sure. I'd like to get a better time, and the distance is interesting, so maybe. Date of review: March 15, 2010
In short: Nice race, not too good before the start, though In full: Pleasant enough race. A good distance, good challenge and large and fast enough to be a worthwhile day out.
My major gripe, like many here, was related to the pre-race. Having travelled to the race from somewhere near enough to make the journey without needing a hotel, but too far to be considered local, I relied on the timetable printed in the race information to help me plan my morning (I got up at 4.30 for the race!). To ignore the published timetable and rush people - when the last shuttle bus hasn't even arrived - then leave folk shivering for fifty minutes because you've rushed everyone to get bags on trucks, get into pens etc made for a shambolic feel to the beginning of the race. This was a shame, because I really enjoyed the race - once I got going.
And what's the point of an organised warmup an hour before the start of a race? Any benefit of the warmup is surely gone by the start if that's the sort of delay.
In short: Well worth the trip to the Midlands. In full: A good day out and a good atmosphere between the runners and the marshalls. Well supported in the towns. Got to be some gripes as ever though, the queues for the loos were ridiculous. The T-shirt was very poor indeed, non-technical and just looked cheap, the organisers missed out on a chance of good publicity here as it was the first kilomathon ever. I can't see many people wearing this top in training. Rest of the goody bag was impresive though. Date of review: March 14, 2010
