In short: Good as my first 10k, startline crammed so couldn't make way to back to get out of faster runners way ....only 4 people dressed up ...it is a charity run after all! In full: Well for a start it was near on impossible for us to squeeze back any further than the 50min mark due to how tight everyone was crammed in!, this led to more competent runners getting narked even though we moved to the side to get out of their way & even started quicker than we should so not to cause any congestion!.
Reading other reviews it sounds like people are blaming beginners rather than the organisers, it's all very well saying that the guy on the tannoy was saying make sure you at the correct starting place but when you can't move through the people to get to that spot what are you meant to do????
All in all I enjoyed the run, very easy going for a beginner, I ran it in 67mins with full fancy dress costume & me and my fellow runners raised £350 for Cystic Fibrosis, so now I have the bit between my teeth, the ciggies are going to stop and I'm going to start training more seriously so can get fit, loose weight & get my fat body under that 60 mins :)
So bring on my next 10k in the new year :) Date of review: November 29, 2005

In short: Not as beginner-friendly as expected, but a good course. In full: As a beginner (this was my first race), I enjoyed this course. The flatness, city centre accessibility etc. makes it ideal for us. In response to some of those who have complained about us stupid beginners clogging up the route, I think you should look to the organisation and the narrowness of the street where we started. No "pens" were visible from where I was standing and so, despite the warnings over the tannoy, I had to guesstimate how far back to stand and just keep moving backwards in the hope that I was in the right place(and then disconcertingly found myself overtaking people for the first couple of Ks, which were very crowded).
As someone else has commented I have no idea whether to subtract 2, 4 or 5 mins from my time as it took ages to start.
Traffic starting up at around the 6-7k mark was also disconcerting. I had taken my own water, luckily, but was surprised not to see any en route.
Lots of cheering from stewards and onlookers was nice though and the warm up at that early, chilly hour helped. Date of review: November 29, 2005

In short: Great atmosphere. A fast, flat route - too many slower runners near the start causing problems for faster runners. Date of review: November 29, 2005

In short: A good event that is spoilt a bit In full: Some people have been a bit harsh about slower runners at the front, but it really is a serious problem. The start is like the Great North but a bit worse as a lot of people are going off quicker. It is clear that many people utterly ignore the pen timings, and many 60min+ runners are in the sub 32 pen which is just stupid. It causes utter chaos and near collisions all over the place. It also adds a lot of time to hundreds of other runners. Date of review: November 28, 2005

In short: city race mostly up and back a dual carriage way In full: disappointed that the road was reopened within minutes of the start, so we plodders were running in the fumes of crawling traffic for the first 4 km Date of review: November 28, 2005

In short: Very popular race. In full: Good race. Wore a Polar SDM and got an indication that perhaps the course was slightly long. Anyone else ? Date of review: November 28, 2005

In short: Every year I do a PB on this course. Scenery is uninspiring but I would go elsewhere for that. Full of runners of every standard and so always someone around to pace with or chat too. Whilst running is not all about PBs, it is alot for me. Date of review: November 28, 2005

In short: Wot water station at 5k? In full: Nice atmosphere, even the marshalls were cheering us on! Did get very cold very quickly in the endless queue to hand in chip/get water etc and had to remember not to be disheartened when I saw the clock at the finish - not being an elite runner it took me a good 3-4 mins to shuffle towards the start and with the results taking (from what I gather is usual) ages to come out, glad I had my own stopwatch. Didn't actually see the predicted finish time markers at the start until I set off but I will know all this next time! Date of review: November 28, 2005

In short: I'll do it again, but only cos its there In full: As has been said elsewhere it would have been preferable to have the T shirt at the end to have something dry to walk back to the car in. I thought the medal was a waste of time, but my daughter thought it was a nice momento of her first proper 10K. See it takes all sorts. The race organisers must try to do something to alleviate the chaos at the end, it took a long time to get to the water, providing the handers out with tables would have helped and handing out the medals slowed things down. In short: Fast There and Back again on Closed Roads In full: Have acheived PB for definite - awaiting official results before declaring, but may have broken sub-40 which would be tremendous. Great to see the elite athletes heading back down from Kirkstall Abbey, and the fun runners heading towards Kirsktall when heading back into town. Date of review: November 28, 2005
