In short: Excellent, well organised, challenging In full: I feel bad for using this race as marathon prep as in it's own right it is probably the best, most well organised event I have run in.
Ample free parking on the airfield, right opposite the start. Helpful marshals on site and very encouraging out on the run.
Airfield section was good, many will recognise as the Top Gear test track. You've done 3 miles by the time you hit the main road. The course is challenging and undulating. It was very hot, may have found it easier on a cooler day! Well stocked and frequent water/jelly baby stations with good marshalling.
The race is 2 laps so a fair few runners finish after 1 as their is a 10 mile race at the same time. It gets a bit quieter now and you can sense the serious business has begun!
Gradual climb up to the airfield entrance seems to go on forever, but before you hit the 19 mile marker you can here the PA system pumping out music.
Finishing straight was line with supporters. Nice quality weighty medal and a chocolate bar at the end. Cheap bacon rolls and tea too!
In short: Excellent Marathon prep. race In full: An extremely well organised, well marshaled 20 mile race. Can't fault the organisation at all. The course is undulating with some testing short climbs but with some generous downhills to match. A lovely medal at the end and the mars bar was scoffed down! It was rather warm today and at the end i was seriously de-hydrated and thankyou to the marshal who served me cup and after cup of water and waited for me to recover. Very kind of her and much appreciated though i could hardly talk! Date of review: March 16, 2014
In short: Brilliant!!! In full: My furthest ever distance, so it was a hard race for me, once off the airfield its pretty much either up or down all the way through the nice country lanes (nothing too brutal), water stations perfectly positioned and plenty of gels and jelly babies etc, the marshalls and water station folks where awesome, i cannot praise this race enough, it was the best ever, the organisation was perfect as exspected from RTL and the weather was simply lovely, this will be hard to beat! Thankyou so much everyone involved Date of review: March 16, 2014
In short: Ideal spring marathon prep race In full: Brilliant organisation. Having the car park, loos, number pick-up, start/finish etc in close proximity is perfect. Don't know when it was changed but getting the airfield section out of the way first has made this race better. Date of review: March 9, 2013
In short: Very impressed - well done to all In full: Can't really add to anything good that's already been said. Just a very enjoyable, well organised event. Loads of runner-to-runner spirit and the marshalls were very good too. Managed to knock 16 mins off my time in 2011, so that was the icing on the cake.. Date of review: March 7, 2013
In short: My favourite pr-marathon race! In full: For me - the perfect race. Starting on the Top Gear track is special - my friends in Australia were blown away! Friendly atmosphere and great course made even better by the support from the marshals. I think this enthusiasm spread to the runners. Loved the finish of the race down the straight and the support of the RD was a nice touch. This was my first Spitfire and I will definitely be back next year. Well done to all those involved in the organisation of this event. Date of review: March 6, 2013
