In short: Hilly - but nowhere as hilly as the very scary profile picture suggests In full: great marshals - very encouraging the scenery that was visible through the fog was beautiful & on a clear day it would have been a very pretty course needs more portaloos at the start thank you Marlow Stridders for a great day Date of review: November 2, 2015
In short: Most hilly road HM I've done...perhaps In full: First time for on this one. Wow, was it hilly. Tough climbs start after quarter mile and go on and on! You can't get any joy from the downhills as they are too darned steep! The first half of this half is incredibly challenging; I ran the notoriously hilly Basingstoke half a few weeks ago but Marlow puts that course to flat shame! Fortunately the second half of the course is a bit kinder. I'm not complaining - I loved it but it's hard. Race HQ all seemed good to me. I entered on the day with no issues. Start was quite narrow and a bit slow but to be honest with those impending hills who really cares? Course is rural and would be very scenic if not for the fog on the day. Support therefore sparse but enthusiastic. Numerous supportive marshals along the entire route. Happy to receive my spot prize at the end and rest my legs. Will be back next year to improve on my dreadful time by conserving some energy for the second half.
Good work Marlow Striders. Thanks.
(PS to the marshal with the stop/go sign who took umbrage when I said "thank you Mr Lollipop man", I'm sorry as it was supposed to be light-hearted and no offence intended) Date of review: November 2, 2015
In short: The tough just got tougher In full: New route this year, mostly the same course, but the middle section was harder than the old course. Lots of us were grumbling, groaning and puffing our way up through the hamlets and country lanes. Scenic, but painful. Good downhill finish though. Bag Drop was chaos and where has the Long Sleeved T-shirt or the Hoodie (last yr only) gone? Start too a while to get going, but was nice to run up Marlow High Street for a change of scenery. I'll be back next year to try to better my time. Date of review: November 2, 2015
In short: Last run this race 7yrs ago and it is much better In full: Somehow managed a PB on this crazy hilly course. That might be swaying my ratings, but it was a great day, the course goes through some lovely places, and the whole thing was friendly and organised well. Tons of friendly marshalls and supporters and easy to get in and out of Marlow. Date of review: November 2, 2015
In short: Interesting race. Some very pleasntt bits too. In full: I am happy. I beat my PB by a lot. I have only run 2 other half marathons, neither of which were as challenging. I am fitter than before. The course profile map on the website is scarier than the reality. Or did it make me do more hill running in preparation? I thought the very prompt text message with my time within 10 minutes of my finish was magnificent. I learned what it might be like to be a lady with a long pre-race queue for a wee. Goody bag was rather mixed. Towel was good in that moment. Banana was delicious. I think there was also one of those foreign neck things for French footballers too. It is a popular race with good reason. I'll be back.
In short: Brings a smile to your face - when you cross the finish line In full: Some minor organisational issues. Haphazard baggage drop. Extremely limited showers ie water stopped flowing. Timing funnel at the start should have been closer to the start line.
Chiltern hills are as tough as ever and its always an "enjoyable" challenge running this race.
Disappointed not to get a T-Shirt this year as in previous years. I wear mine as a badge of honour after tackling those hills. Date of review: November 1, 2015
In short: A bit lumpy but very well organized In full: My first outing on this one in over 10 years and those hills are not getting any flatter. But a fine course with lots of great scenery, excellent organization, everything just worked. Must say I prefer the old start to the new one, which I found a bit of a faff, but it won't put me off having another go next year. A pleasant day out, although I am a bit achey now.
