In short: Good, could've been great In full: The Course: From Holyrood down Portobello beach, back round Arthurs Seat before heading around central Edinburgh. It's a far superior route to the EMF as it actually feels like a city run. There are a few gradual hills but three big downhills in the second half which are very welcome.
The Organisation: Everything was running smoothly, including excellent traffic management at each point, but it was complete chaos after the finish. Waiting well over an hour to pick up baggage as the organisers weren't prepared for the Scottish weather. It wasn't fun being battered by wind and rain, slowly seizing up. No bags on offer with the goodies so everyone was juggling at the same time. The organisers have been very receptive to the criticism on the facebook page, so hopeful they'll rework things for 2014.
Actually, the corrals at the start were all over the shop too...I was in the 2nd from the front and passing people who were already walking after less than 1km. What the hell were they doing there?!
The volunteers were terrific, and the public were out in force despite the horrible conditions. That was fantastic and helped loads. However, the advertised bands-every-mile were almost non-existent from Mile 8.
In spite of the negative comments, I loved this course, the medal's the best I've ever had, the support on course was excellent and the post-race supplies were plentiful and gratefully received. I reckon I'll probably go again next year. Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Not very rock 'n' roll In full: On the positive side, the course was good - challenging and made more so by the weather - and the drinks stations provided not just water but isotonic drinks (at about 4 and 9 miles) and apparently gels too. The isotonic drink containers weren't the easiest to drink from and tended to spill, but at least it wasn't cups. Water was in bottles - good. Timing mats at 10k and 10 miles were a welcome addition.
On the negative side, access to the starting pens was not easy - it appeared that lots of people had to enter via corral 1 and make their way back through the crowds of runners. The atmosphere on the course was a little lacking - especially for a 'rock 'n' roll' event. While one can't blame people for wanting to stay out of the wind and rain, there also did not seem to be as many bands on the course as advertised. Then, at the end, there didn't seem to be any goody bags - that is, we received water, isotonic drink, power bar, banana, crisps etc. but no bag to put them in!
Finally, with the headline act cancelled, this can't have been much fun for spectators at the start/finish. Not very rock 'n' roll! I'm glad I didn't need to pick up baggage too.
Okay, so it was windy, so some of this can be forgiven. However, the wind had been forecast pretty accurately and one would expect the rock 'n' roll franchise to be experienced enough to be able to handle it. Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: Potential to be a great race - lovely route with some challenging hills to keep things interesting, but very unlucky with the weather In full: Unfortunately the weather was a real let down for this race as the headline act had to be cancelled and meant less support along the route. The route is lovely though even in gale force winds and driving rain! Good selection of food and drinks afterwards, women's sized t- shirts and a nice chunky medal. Date of review: April 15, 2013
In short: All the ingredients spoiled by the weather In full: A cold, windy and rainy Edinburgh for a spring race! This made the organisation a bit chaotic because of the strong winds around the tented area. Atmosphere out on course was thin in (most places) but as always stewards great, some hardy locals encouraging us all and the bands were good but thin on the ground. Some issues (for me) with organisation of entry into the pens - mixed up with slow and faster runners and no checks and also baggage collection. Final point - contents of goody bag ok but there was no bag to hold it all in and saw lots of runners trying to carry items - not good. Overall intent is there but needs tweaks and better weather...
