In short: Start is terrible and the water at water stations is not drinkable....otherwise race is ok In full: I found that arrangements at the start to be silly and unorganised. Entry to the pens was a free for all so although I was in my correct pen at the front I was surrounded by slower runners, who continually hindered me at the start! Very frustrating. Please can you correctly marshall the pens next year. Then the water pouches you were given at the drink stations were a joke, as you simply could not get the water out of pouch in to you! I ran the whole race with out water.....which made the race very difficult for me. Please can we have cups or bottles next year? Both these factors prevented me from getting the pb I was expecting. In short: A fun friendly frolic through Nottingham In full: Excellent race and organised to perfection. The marshals were super and the support from the crowd was fantastic. Shame about the terrible water 'pouches' which have been a problem for two consecutive years; you either can't get a drop out of them or a jet of water hits the back of the throat and makes you choke. Not great when running. Date of review: October 21, 2013
In short: Too much emphasis on the half-marathon In full: This was a pretty good marathon. The weather was beautiful, which helped. Overall though there was too much focus on the half-marathon. So if, like me, you were running the full marathon then you had to run most of the second half of the run with few other runners and fewer spectators (despite the glorious weather). The route could have taken in more of Nottingham's sights too. Other small gripes;
1) the two people manning the water station at about 14 or 15 miles weren't paying attention (probably because of the time gaps between the small number of full marathon runners), so there was a delay while I had to stop, back-track, and wait for them to unpack water for me. 2) The 03:15 pace runner had to stop at about 20 or 21 miles because his arms were tired from carrying the flag. He carried on after stopping, but wasn't pace-ing any more. 3) There seemed to be some mile markers missing between 18 miles and the finish, which is just when you need them. Either that or they weren't obvious. Date of review: October 21, 2013
In short: Very much geared towards the half marathon. The second half of the marathon depsite being flat was dull and short of support and interest. Even the first half has extensive uninspiring stretches - through the boots site for one. Next year? Not sure In full: The start enclosures need policing better. There were a number of much slower runners starting in the 3-3.30 (1.30 - 1.45 half) gate [red zone]. They just got in the way. This included corporate relay runners. Is there a way of checking on abilities as some who'd declared themselves within the red start zone were clearly not up to it and caused problems in the initial stretch.
Streaming between the half and full on the embankment was appaling. Signage was almost non-existant. It needs to be commenced almost as runners turn onto the emabnkment, not 20 metres before the split.
Holme Pierrepont lake and Colwick park are uninspiring at best. Can Nottingham with it's rich heritage not offer a better route Date of review: October 20, 2013
In short: Very good race and great atmosphere In full: Very good race with a great atmosphere and well marshalled. One thing they need to sort out is the finish. The marathon runners need separating well before the stands as you had the elite runners finishing in between the half marathon runners. Not the thing you want after running 26 miles! One solution is to widen the run in from the embankment. Not even the people on the commentary new the winners were finishing!! Date of review: October 16, 2013
