In short: Great race but, er, 1/3rd mile too long!!!! In full: Had a wonderful day out. My first proper race in preparation for the FLM, and was very satisfied with 1h32'30. I was even more satisfied when I discovered that due to human error everyone ran at least 13.4 miles. Only in Devon! :-) The run was lovely. Mostly pretty flat, but with small undulations on the first half. The final 6 miles along the Tarka trail is lovely, though we hit a bit of headwind coming up the estuary. The weather was glorious, and the organisers were great getting me in following an injury that I thought would mean I couldn't partipate. I would give one word of warning though. I live around here and we sometimes get stinking wet days. The race would be much tougher on one of those. Overall though - fabulous day out. Date of review: March 1, 2009

In short: Slow start but otherwise a very pleasant race In full: That bollard in the first mile could have caused some grief. Date of review: March 1, 2009

In short: Some disappointing aspect this year In full: A few little niggles have made this more of a chore than previous years. Firstly I sent my entry with a first class SAE put the post would not deliver it because it was 9p short, so I got charged £1.09 and had to drive to pick it up. This was due to the chip so an indication of postage required would have been appreciated, other people I know received theirs with a first class stamp no problem. Distance ! I felt good this morning and went for a PB, my pace on my garmin was looking good yet when I did the maths at 12 miles I could work out that I was not going to PB, this demoralised and confused me as all along I was pushing hard and doing well. I thought it may have been because of the tunnel it had thrown my garmin off (it has been fine on previous years though) My garmin says 13.6 miles but others I know said 13.49. I was talking to a club mate and moaning about missing my PB by seconds when he said the course is measured incorrectly and you would have done it !! I hope they adjust the times to reflect this and maybe people will be happier, there is nothing worse than really killing yourself only to see the clock ticking over what you were expecting to do !! In short: Innacurate distance has meant time totally meaningless In full: I came down from Bristol for this race specifically to get a decent time in. Yes, it was a lovely course, nice weather, friendly etc but the 13.45 miles I ran as opposed to 13.1 has totally ruined the day for me. This may be harsh but I really think it is inexcusable organisation for a race of this size. Date of review: March 1, 2009

In short: As TW3 says - what was the distance In full: Mile one on garmin 1.25!!! (i passed mile marker in 9.10 whilst 7m30s miling) then mile markers were all a mile or there abouts on garmin. total 13.46 miles. Such a shame that, although i ran a great pb - it is meaningless for that pb glow. Suggestion i heard was that the start was slightly different to previous years but mile marker hadn't allowed for that. Such a shame as race is brilliantly organised, lovely location, loads of friendly marshalls, great finish on the river front, lovely technical t shirt and great refreshments for our supporters to enjoy whilst we were running. Such a shame. Have I mentioned that the distance being wrong was a shame? Date of review: March 1, 2009

In short: Loved the course - but was it really 13.1 miles? In full: First the good stuff: scenic course, a few hills to challenge you in the first half, very pretty and flat second half; good water stops; a scattering of very supportive people around the course; great t shirt; very friendly.
But I don't think I was the only one whose Garmin measured the first mile at 1.25 miles. That demoralised me a bit, and I wonder what it did for those without a garmin. The final distance was 13.43 - and it's usually pretty accurate.
Oh, and great organisation to text through my time by the time I'd got to the car - well done, raceahead. Date of review: March 1, 2009
