In short: Well organised and friendly. In full: This was my first running of the Barnsley 10k and I would do it again. The couple of hills within the run were not too difficult but some of the comments I heard after the race made it sound like some runners were expecting it to be pancake flat. The marshals and locals were typically friendly and the organisation seemed fine. The roadworks just before the end of the run made the approach to the finish a little tricky though, but all in all the race was good. Date of review: November 18, 2012
In short: Fog didnt help but the organisation was a bit flaky In full: Never seen a finish quite like it . Cars parked made it very narrow and runners competing with cars buses etc made it less than safe. 90 degree bend 25 yards from finish Date of review: November 21, 2011
In short: fog and hills In full: I don't like hills. I can't run up them fast enough. I want to do better on hills so entered this one to gain more hill time. With a Fetch hill score of 204 (105m up/91m down) this one had enough hills for me. At £10 is race is at the bottom end of the entry fee scale, impressive given chip timing and tshirt (cotton not technical). Marshals where you need them and 1 water stop(cup-so had to slow to drink). A row of portable toilets helped keep the queue short). Parking was mainly on side roads and on the main road where, it turned out, we had the finish. This caused a few problems with cars trying to get through a narrowed road whilst runners were 2/3/4 abreast running for the line. A bit of a shame that the finish has a slowing left hand 90 degree corner 20 metres before the chip tunnel. Date of review: November 20, 2011
In short: Well organised and reasonably testing run In full: Well done and thank you to Barnsley AC for a well organised and marshalled run.
The rolling course made its way through Yorkshire farmland, making for a pleasant if unspectacular course. Having heard tales of the hills at the end and being prepared for them in my pacing I found myself undone early on by the incline around the 1 mile mark, coming into it too quickly from the fast start and paying later on with a slower than anticipated time.
I guess the ups and downs balance out so with better hill training and sensible pacing this could have been reasonably quick.
Overall a good race and worth the trip. Date of review: November 15, 2010
In short: Seemed more ups than downs, but a good race. In full: One minute silence was reasonably well observed, although those at the back probably didn't hear the announcer. Should have used his megaphone. The race itself is challenging without being suicidal, and we appeared to be going uphill a lot more than we did down. Overall a very decent race and one for the calendar for next year. Date of review: November 15, 2010
