In short: Excellent marathon race again In full: This is my second Three Forts and I would say it's definitely my favourite marathon, always very friendly and such a beautiful area to run in as well. The hills are always a challenge and make you want to come back for more! Organisation was superb as always so big thanks to the organisers and marshals. Date of review: May 5, 2008

In short: AMazing scenery, brilliantly organised race In full: This is the first time I've done the 3 Forts Half. Very hard work but the scenery is just stunning. Its one of the best organised races I've ever done, real contrast to the Bath Half. Rotary organised races are normally a sign of a well organised race and this was no exception. In short: Scenic race - well organised but of course, tough. In full: Like some others, I did this as a training run for another event. IDeally suited to this as it's not a PB course. Would be nice to come back and give it a bit of welly to see how I do. As such it was very pleasant - I enjoyed the scenery & atmosphere. Not one to take on lightly but very good fun for those who have similar event experience. Marshals all cheerful as were the numerous spectators. Very well stocked aid stations. Frequent too. Lovely medal. Recommended race. Thanks & well done. Date of review: May 4, 2008

In short: a great event the weather made it a suntan day if a bit hot In full: This is one of the best of the downs marathons. The view as you drop down to cross the river bridge is as good as it gets. The forcast rain did not appear, who trains these weather men/women. It was wall to wall sun with the many spectators relaxing spread out on the grass in the first real day of summer. I had the wrong shoes on after last year when I and many others worn road shoes and as a result did a good inpersonation of bambi on ice. This year it was, hot, hard and rocky. My poor feet suffered(moan moan) I did meet a young lady on the way round, it was her first marathon and she finished in style. There were a few errors on the marshalling side a few marshal seem to leave early and it was ok if you knew the route but tired runners can get lost. Furthermore my wife on the half marathon walk was not impressed as she and acouple of other walkers were sent thewrong way. On the whole a great race on a brilliant day well done. In short: Hard, very hard. In full: I was suprised at how much I hurt because of the hills. And Having the extra mile didn't bother me as that mile was all downhill. It was a well run route with excellent support. The only downside was one of the water stations had no water ( still had biscuits tho )

In short: The 'tough one' really is.............. In full: Really enjoyed the marathon. Used it as a training run for Edinburgh marathon in 3 weeks time. 10 feed stations, excellent signage, great marshalls, best countryside one could ask for, great value and a good cause. Really enjoyed today. Would recommend changing the medal though as I now have several! Date of review: May 4, 2008

In short: Hilly but ultimately rewarding In full: The day was warm but not overly hot. The course was quite hilly and very pretty. Organisation was generally very good with the only downsides being s couple of missing marshals in the last third of the race and problems with the results computer so the prize giving was a bit haphazard. Overall a very good race (accurately measured) with a good feeling about it. Special mention goes to the scenery, and the nice medal presented by the Lord Mayor no less. Recommended. In short: Special race - but with some organisational problems this year. In full: This is why the organisational rating has been marked down this year. I ran the Half again, not the full marathon which I had hoped to do, but which, regrettably, I couldn't for personal reasons.
The main problem with the organisation was to do with the marshalling at Cissbury Ring. Last year I nearly went the wrong way and was saved from this by other runners calling out. The marshals then were just standing there talking to each other and not pointing the way. This year I was running down from Chanctonbury Ring, only to be approached from two other half-marathoners running uphill towards me. Apparently, they had been sent the wrong way up the walkers route towards Chanctonbury, from the same marshalling station, not going the proper way via the point near Beggar's Bush. It mucked up their race and I almost thought I had gone the wrong way too! This has been reported to the Race Director, who no doubt will inform Rotary.
The event is a brilliant fitness test but today I was not on song, quite apart from the misdirection debacle. This had also affected the lead runners too, I was told. After a good start, the heat early on took its toll and I was nearly sent flying about 3 or 4 times by the terrain, as well as nearly twisting my ankle twice as well. Quite a contrast to last year's memorable event. And I was three minutes or so slower too. The terrain one can do nothing about of course; it was just that everything did not seem to go to plan today. I think that mentally I was not 100%, in view of my not being able to do the full marathon.
Other than that, the refreshments at the end were better than last year, and there was a proper finishing funnel too. A well organised massage tent for a ten minute massage for just £5 (proceeds to Rotary), and of course loads of space to warm up and stretch. Once again the Mayor of Worthing was there to present the (lovely) medals. She was very sweet and kind towards this very tired runner.
I may or may not do the half again in 2009 as London is only one week beforehand, and I should have a guaranteed place for this. We shall see in any case, otherwise yes, definitely, as long as the marshalling can be sorted out. Thanks Rotary once again for putting on this special event. Date of review: May 4, 2008
