In short: Over-rated In full: Firstly, the scenery is amazing with excellent views and picturesque villages. If you want a different challenge then I'd go for it. The main issue I have with the race and the reason why I have given it average reviews and not followed the majority of other people is because of what you get in return for your entry fee. Now don't get me wrong, the fee is reasonable at 18 quid non-aff but there is no chip timing and no medal. I just think that having completed the course (a challenge in itself)and to receive a non technical t-shirt which looks like it got mixed in the washer with a red sock and came out a horrible pink is a big let down!! Having completed a course like that then a medal would surely be more appropriate than a t-shirt than you can't even use for training runs. A very challenging course so turn up prepared!

In short: Briiliant run - made even more enjoyable by great marshalls & supportive locals! In full: Love this run! Well tough on legs & breathing - BUT superb views & a real 'feel good' factor (especially when you finish!). Big thank you to marshals - hard to believe this is a village run half marathon - so many of other runs I have done would probably be envious of the camaraderie & organisation that the Eyam team show = WELL DONE TO YOU ALL!! This is not to forget the enthusiastic support of the brilliant local people - the value of which is not to be under-estimated with a challenge as tough as this course is for most runners. (And the cheese burger with onions at the finish was to die for..!!). Brilliant day out - definitely be back! Thanks again Eyam. Date of review: May 19, 2013

In full: Eyam charity half marathon
"One of the toughest half marathon races on the circuit"
Forest Gump and the 'multi colour swap shop' headed off to the beautiful small Peak District village of Eyam. Eyam is famous for being the so called 'plague village'. Where from a population of 350 only 83 villagers survived a plague in 1665-6. www.eyamplaguevillage.co.uk/
Nick even out did himself in an outrageous range of colours and running kit. The Miners Arms pub, the only pub in the village was a good resting place before the start. Massages were a bargain £3.
Local celeb and ex Premier referee Uriah Rennie sounded the horn to chants of "off, off"...and we're off, 450 runners in all.
The run starts with a 400 foot climb in the first two miles. It then levelled off for about three miles before a 800 foot drop over 4.5 miles.
Driving to the race we passed the Coolstone, a stone in which money, usually soaked in vinegar, was placed for 'outsiders' in exchange for food and medicine. The Riley graves where 7 members of one family died in a week told its only hallowing story.
The race is really enjoyable, the views of the Derbyshire countryside were breath taking and the route was virtually traffic free.
"Think this is tough? Wait till you get to the next hill!" Although I knew it was coming the 'cheerful' way the chap informed me that the worst to come did make me smile.
At mile 10 it came, a 800 foot climb in just 2 miles.
The final mile or so was all down hill.
Along the route the local people clapped and encouraged the runners. 6 water stations kept us going and young children offered us sweets. The marshals were superb. At every turn, hill or crossing they gave tremendous support.
In all it really is a community run, the race is excellently organised and marshalled. I think everyone in the village played a role.
Would I run it again? Yes, it's a great race

In short: Up....and up... but great fun! In full: First time entrant - fantastic organisation, ran like clockwork with the best views I've ever seen in a race. The village atmosphere and support around the course was brilliant. Definitely going to be a regular event. The first hill sorted me out, fast 7 mile stretch was fun but the second killer hill had me walking some of it - but worth it for the fast mile or so down to the finish and great reception. In short: Awesome views and an atmosphere to match In full: I've got nothing but praise for the organisation and the spectacular views afforded over the route of the course. I chose the event specifically for the challenging route and it certainly lived up to the billing! The race was relatively small and I was very nervous lining up as, although I was in my club colours, I very rarely look round a start line and see such a high proportion of other runners lining up in club vests....and the selection I did see seemed to scream peak or fell runners. Gulp! Fortunately I didn't embarrass myself, but there was no doubt a bit more hill training in the lead up would have given me a better chance of climbing the second of the killer hills (not be be confused with the constant smaller undulations) without having to resort to walking quite so often. The drinks stations were plentiful and well placed, the marshalls on the course and supporters in the village were enthusiastic and a very welcome sight. But above all the scenery was just immense. As we ran along a ridge road there was way too much of it to take in at one point, then everything closed in as we wound through tree and bluebell lined roads. This is right up there as one of my favourite races ever - I might have to train harder and come back next year and see what I can do.....Thanks to all involved in organising such a great event and sharing your part of the world.
