In short: Electric atmosphere, overwhelming sense of being part of something BIG In full: My second ever running event and my first Half Marathon. This was an overwhelming experience. The event is televised on BBC One. Running queue was entertaining as big screens relayed the presentations featuring Ant and Dec and other celebrities. A Red Arrow display overhead made us all feel special. I trained hard for this race and was hoping to run this in 1 hour 50mins but I realised as I started running that getting a pb was going to be a challenge as the running crowd is too dense to get a steady rhythm. Maybe perhaps because I was right at the back. Still made it under 2hours at 1hr 58min which I was elated with. The chip timer worked brilliantly. Make sure you plan your meetup with family and friends well before the race as mobile reception is minimal at the end of the race for some reason. The charity camps were brilliant, full buffets and massages. BUPA also gave everyone free message. The course was fantastic and there were rock bands playing on route and at the 6 or 7 mile mark, a brilliant Elvis impersonator was belting out Burning Love which upped my tempo! Overall, a memorable experience and will go again next year. Date of review: October 3, 2010
In short: Great run for charity In full: As others have said, great atmosphere but the energy drinks were no good and too many bottles on the road. The childrens run on sat was fantastic as well ! Date of review: October 2, 2010
In short: Great atmosphere and enough hills to challenge. Bloody awful traffic getting home! In full: Do everything early. Get there Early. The bag buses leave at 10am and the race pens are full by 10.15am. Book a hotel early, probably start looking now (October) as they will book up and you'll have to stay in Darlington and drive up at the break of dawn. Take the next day off work so you can stay in Newcastle on Sunday night and not struggle in the huge amounts of traffic leaving Gateshead.
What a great race tho and what an atmosphere! I chatted to people all the way round and was boosted by all the different people's charities and determination to finish.
I got round in 1hr 55, which I was pleased about as it was my first half.
The best part? The lady standing outside her house in the heart of South Shields on mile 11 with tins of custard creams and chocolate digestives to help us to get to the finish.
Can't wait to do it again. Date of review: October 2, 2010
