In short: Excellent half despite the weather In full: Great half marathon, hills were not as bad as made out by some previous reviews, although the signs of encouragement were much appreciated on the hill at 9 miles. Beautiful scenery, we even had some wild horses cross the road in front of us! Well done to the marshall's who stood and braved the conditions. nice 30th anniversary finishers medal Oh... and got a new PB! :-) Date of review: September 24, 2012
In short: WET AND COLD BUT GREAT FUN In full: This was my first Half, and I thought it was a great course with challenging but achievable hills, and varied scenery. Hats off to marshalls and spectators who must have been frozen and soaked through. I just ask that the foil blankets are given out as soon as we get across the line, before the water and snack bars, because I became cold in seconds of finishing. I will definitely do this again next year. Date of review: September 24, 2012
In short: Challenging weather In full: A big thank you to the locals and marshals who did a wonderful job in very wet, cold and challenging conditions. No real problems.....but all I got at the end was my medal, which I was greatful to receive but some kind of goody bag with a bananna or energy drink would have been most welcome. It was my 7th half and all of the previous races something has been provided at the end. Also a few energy drinks instead of just water at a station would have been welcome, but minor points. I would do the race again for the scenery which would be much more appreciated if the weather wasnt so bad. Date of review: September 23, 2012
In short: Great organisation and a good setting made for a great race, the weather was dismal but didn't ruin it! In full: Plus points: 1. Bag storage near the start, the army transport and return your bag to you at the finish. This was very well organised. I expected a long queue to collect but they were very speedy - great job!
2. Lovely scenic flat (ish) course through New Forest countryside.
3. Well signed and marshalled with clear mile markers.
4. Chip timing.
5. Large number of runners makes for a good big race feel.
Minus points 1. T shirt costs extra
2. Couldn't find car park, I thought it was off Gore Rd, it isn't. Could have done with a sign to car park outside the school - I saw sevral other lost runners.
In short: A huge "thank you" to the marshalls! In full: What heros. At least I was there to run in the pouring rain because I'd paid to do it - those guys were out in the elements being cheerful and encouraging when they didn't have the runners' madness as an excuse. Great organisation, lovely course, the hills weren't as bad as were expected (thankfully) and had no problems with toilet queues or getting out the car park. Thanks for a great race and for indulging us runners by standing out in the driving rain. Date of review: September 23, 2012
In short: Despite terrible weather, this was an excellent run very well marshalled. In full: If you are looking for a good half/full marathon with great scenery, good course in respect of fast time and a very enjoyable long weekend away then this is for you. The hills were not as bad as I thought with the straight and downhill sections more than making up for it. The marshalls did a fantastic job in horrible conditions and the crowd support was good considering. I'm going to be back next yr and hopefully can get my time under the 1hr40min mark (1hr42today!)
In short: A wet day for it but a great race: lovely location and great organisation In full: Not sure how many marshals were out there getting soaked today but there were a fair number and they did a cracking job - also nice to get encouragement from the many damp bystanders who had turned out along the very scenic route. I got totally drenched too but it helped to regulate my temperature quite nicely and I found the pacing comfortable - didn't think any of the uphills were too long or steep, and it seemed like there were plenty more downhill stretches to make up the time on. In short: Great day , people & scenary despite the gales! In full: Doubtful to start with with the weather challenging organizers and runners alike but then all persevered. Inspired by the blind runner and his guide in front of me. The school hall was a mini puddling area by the time I got to my bags. All in all enjoyed the day and embraced the pain. will try for next year! Date of review: September 23, 2012
In full: What is it with the New Forest and the wet weather? Did the John Austin Half earlier in the Year and guess what it was raining then too!! Great race, despite the weather! Hats off to the volunteers who despite the bad weather supported the runners and the event with a smile on their faces! Many Thanks it was appreciated! Thanks go to the brave locals who also came out to support the event too! Well orgnaised event, no problems with parking, signs, toilets, changing area (but as someone has mentioned god help the cleaners who have to clean up the water in the sports hall!!) All in all despite the weather it was a good run and i will be back again next year! Thanks Again to everyone involved in the organisation of the NFHM. Date of review: September 23, 2012
In short: Quality race as ever - even in the downpours ! In full: My 7th or 8th time here. Never dissapointed. It is well run, well marshalled and in a great part of the world. The traffic issues are now sorted out from previous years. A couple of testing hills thrown in for good measure. Dreadful wetaher today but somehow managed aPB by 24 secs. Big thank you to the organisers and I pitty the cleaners at the school later !! Date of review: September 23, 2012
