In short: The pleasure I got from running over the bridge reminded me of why I run. In full: A challenging run but a couple of hills helps to keep things interesting. The only moan was the water stations, the lack of bottles meant runners were just stopping to take on water from cups and there were one or two collisions. I understand that to supply bottles will cost more, but I would gladly pay a little extra on the entry fee. The support was great, especially at the finish and considering the weather Hull has had subsequently we were bloody lucky.
In short: Bridge fun on the way out, not so fun on the way back!. In full: Bad points = Entry, carparking and the start of the race were chaos, over a thousand runners being frogmarched a couple of hundred yards down a road to an unknown start point was indeed bizarre. The big hill at 9 Miles (and don't let anyone fool you, it is a BIG hill) was really tough, this was the most unflat flat race i've ever seen, were there more uphills than downhills or is that just me, how can the bridge be uphill all the way both ways!. Cups at the water stations leave you two options, walk untill you've taken on water (risking never getting going again!) or throw most of it up your nose, bottles next year please. The "official" times, sorry but these appear to be way out.
The good bits = The bridge is the big attraction of this race and it didn't disappoint, the views and the enthusiastic onlookers were well worth getting out of bed for. The weather was lovely, if not a little hot for us runners, no doubt this brought the crowds out, which with the most enthusiastic marshalls I've experienced made for a great atmosphere. Good quality T-shirt and medal were a bonus, as was the bottled water handed out at the finish.
Overall a good event. Date of review: June 27, 2007
In short: And I thought East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire were flat!! In full: My first half-marathon. Enjoyed it, but second half of the course was quite challenging. Warm weather too didn't help (although can't be helped!). Nice medal and t-shirt at the finish. plenty of water stops, although bottles would have been better than plastic cups. A bit more encouragement from the marshals would have been nice, good support from locals! Date of review: June 26, 2007
In short: Like the curate's egg - good in parts In full: Great running over the bridge, but rest of course not that scenically spectacular. Couple of challenging inclines second half of race. Nearly ran into couple of moving cars on one road. Plenty of water stations, but too short in length, causing some bumping amongst runners. Water cups difficult to drink from and run - bottles better. Good end of race support, but race goodies disappointing (Wilmslow produces the best stuff I've received). Poor signposting to venue, and took long time to get out of car park. Date of review: June 26, 2007
In short: Not bad In full: The traffic control was very poor. In fact I am surprised that no-one got run down. We nearly got run down ourselves. Road that are being crossed by runners should be closed completely for the duration of the race. Date of review: June 26, 2007
In short: Worth it for bridge views alone In full: Coming from flat lands at south end of Lincs, hills were challenging, but the big hill at nine miles seemed to pass relatively easily. Start could do with a bit more organisation, but as a relative novice, that may be par for the course. Achieved a new PB so will not complain, but that was probably more down to the shape I'm in , rather than the ease of the course. Terrific location though and good support from locals especially at finish. Date of review: June 26, 2007
In short: Very enjoyable first half In full: Being my first race I was a bit apprehensive about it but the atmosphere and friendliness of the marshalls and other runners made it very enjoyable. I started quite a way back and was overtaking people all the way which was good psychologically. Call me mad but the hill at 9 miles was my favourite bit - after that I didn't really notice the run back onto the bridge. Being my first I was guarenteed a PB aswell. Date of review: June 26, 2007
In short: great race.good atmosphere but quite a tough one In full: We left Sheffield at 8am,and could see the HUmber Bridge at 9.30 thinking we had loads of time to pee,but there being no signs off theA63,we drove around Hessle with not a single race direction.Luckily a bloke got us back on track to the huge traffic queue to car park3(mud-slide).I was at the loos at 10.27,so cuting it fine. However, the race was excellent even though alot harder than I'd expected(i thought it was a flat area too),loads of water stations for the hot weather, great atmosphere and support, enjoyed post-race massage and coffee n tea-cake in the cafe.Nice medal n T-shirt.Will come back.
