In short: Rain, Rain and more Rain, yet still an excellent race In full: A "must do at least once" race [third time for me]. Given the atrocious conditions this year the race was run superbly with realy friendly marshals, though I did hear one was missing at a turn off and the leaders went a bit of course. Nevertheless will be back next year with the rest of the club. Date of review: August 23, 2006

In short: Toot Toot ! Here Comes the Train ! In full: Superbly themed race, and excellent for spectators and runners alike. Raining like cats and dogs this year, which was brilliant. Fell shoes a must in these conditions. Top atmosphere and like a carnival weekend. A real must-do in glorious North Wales. Date of review: August 22, 2006

In short: Train......rain.......definitely do it again! In full: Beating it was always going to be a big ask, and with the weather it was even harder, but what a great race. It was everything I was told it would be; a nice variation of terrain (how do you manage to get a bog half way up a hill?). The marshals were numerous and encouraging....loads of drinks/sponge stations too.
On reflection I think I can find those few minutes required to beat it next year. Definitely one to come back for...... Date of review: August 22, 2006

In short: Fortunately didnt loose sense of humour in the mud In full: Since reading "The Looniness of the Long Distance Runner", Ive wanted to do Race the Train and it didnt dissappoint. The course has been described as tough and if you are only used to canal paths, small bridges and tarmac, it is more than really tough, but a fantastic experience. The train toots and the spectators scream, all adding to the romance of the race. I wore old trainers with lace locks and often had to stop to haul them out of the mud, they also seemed to have no benefit on the slopes as my feet slipped out of them due to steep hills "camber". The single foot path dissappeared in places and at times you couldnt tell the difference between a cow pat and puddle, but again the train would toot and youd be motivated to move your chassis even though you have no hope of beating even the second train. A great weekend and a truely great escape from the monotany of yet another LSR on tarmac. Date of review: August 21, 2006

In short: Enjoyed it this year - knocked 10 mins or so off last year's time In full: The conditions really suited me, loved it apart from getting stuck behind people who seemed to be wearing racing flats and didn't get out of the way on the single file bit. Thanks to all the marshalls, it must have been miserable for them - also the spectators who were wet through, but still shouting loudly from the train and other vantage points. In short: Not as tough as some people would have you believe, unless you want to beat the train. Quite a few people this year who should consider investing in a pair of fell shoes. In full: I'll be back to beat the train next year - leaner and fitter possibly but older inevitably. Date of review: August 21, 2006
