In short: I got a course record!!!!! In full: .....sadly not for the fastest running time, but for the slowest time that the course has been run in. But still chuffed that I got a record; and that I finished!!!
Great support from both locals and the marshals: especially the two sweepers on the bike who were very patient whilst having to continually stop and wait for me; the 2 marshals who filled up my bladder bag; the marshal who had brought along bananas as emergency food, as no food was supplied, and the police man who followed me on a scooter for the last 5 miles when all the other marshals were pulled from the race and was very encouraging even when I kept stopping to walk along the promenade - and all the people at the finish who encouraged me over the finishing line - including one of the finishers who came over to shake my hand - much appreciated.
I loved the relay teams starting 30 mins after the main race: it was great having all those encouraging comments as they went past, and then the hoots from their cars as after they had finished and were making their way back, were still encouraging me on. It all helped!!!!
Finally a big thank you to my husband, who despite finishing the marathon way before me, came back along the course, to encourage me along the last mile to the finish. Date of review: October 4, 2011
In short: Short course and not a road marathon In full: Advertised everywhere as a road marathon and it's not, probably a quarter of the course is off road and I've since discovered that the UKA permit is indeed for a Multi terrain event. Very disappointed, I wasted a weekend and a lot of money going to Jersey to do this race. The course was also short so not as many folk did PB's as they thought. The first half of the course is lovely. Good support and kind marshalls but not one marshall did anything about the idiots wearing headphones, which were supposed to be banned from this race. I did speak to the race director and he didn't seem to be aware that the race was advertised as road! But he did apologise (he was a very nice chap) but I doubt they'll do anything to put this right so I will have to take the matter further. Date of review: October 4, 2011
In short: A great race to run In full: It was so hot but managed to complete my first marathon. Liked having the relay running alongside the main event as all runners encouraged each other as they passed. Regular water stations, marshals superb as were the people of Jersey who turned out to encourage us through the heat.Shame it was too hot for many who DNF. Finishing First Marathon 10/10 Running through the cheering crowd of runners at the first few crossovers 10/10 Shouts of come on Serpie on the way round 10/10 Cameraderie of other runners pacing and encouraging each other across the line 10/10 Everyone on the beach cheering us along the final 2 miles 10/10 Police motorbike that stayed with Lizzie all the way to the finish 10/10 Organiser and marshals chering in Lizzie, last finisher 10/10 Lizzie for carrying on through the heat while others stopped 10/10 Date of review: October 2, 2011
In short: Well organised scenic marathon In full: Growing marathon which is not flat. This year it was hot but plenty of water and Powerade available. Some nice scenery but also road traffic as roads are not closed but well marshalled. Encouraging locals and marshall help you along. Enthusiatic crowd at finish . Good quality medal and tech. T-shirt. There is also popular team 5 stage relay race run at the same time - if like me you have to drop out, drop out at a relay point and get a quick transfer back to the start/finish area. I was DNF but my wife got a PB - c'est la vie!! Date of review: October 2, 2011
In short: A great marathon course with atmosphere. In full: A race designed to avoid traffic. One long four mile hill that is steep past lakes and autumns greenery.Inspirational scenary through a theraputic woodland that takes you all the way back down that steep hill with an eight mile decline between 12-21.The finish is along the beach and fast times are ensured as long as the wind abates.Excellent water stations 1/4 litre bottles of highland spring were appreciated.
