In short: Surrey countryside at it's best
In full: I have being doing this event since it was the original Holmbury Half and it has come from a small XC event growing every year to becoming a great trail race.
Sure you can forget times & mile splits but everything else is spot on.
And at only £10 it really put's cetain other events at 3-4 the price to shame.
Well done BVR & MABAC

In short: One of the best races of the year - tough but great
In full: You'd have to go a long way to find a tougher half and the climbing starts early on and doesn't really relent. BUT, set against that are fantastic organisation, great views, really good value for money and a brilliant off-road race.

In short: A good challenge, but get some hill work in beforehand :0)
In full: Very well organised, the route was clear with marshalls at key points. Parking was made easy as you were directed to one of the many spaces and the facilities were also good (changing room, plenty of toilets and showers). A challenging route and the down hill segments were sometimes harder than the inclines due to rocky, tree route paths. To summarise I found it a friendly, fun, well organised, challenging run.

In short: Felt more like mountaineering!
In full: This was my second attempt at x - country. I am a road racer and wanted a change from pounding the tarmac. What can I say? This was certainly a challenge and I have never experienced the sheer relentless number of hills. These are not short swift climbs (although there were plenty of those) but full on mile long climbs. My Garmin recorded 3030 ft (ascent) and this was by far the hardest half I've done. I decided early on after one of the monster hills to do a run / walk strategy. Just as well and I got through in a fairly acceptable time 2:06. I can't wait to tackle this again but I'll have to get the practice in. Pounding the suburbs just can't prepare you for this type of terrain and race. I take my hat off to all the runners who ran the whole race.

The start/finish is pure classic rural Surrey. Grand school buildings, cricket oval etc.I would fully recommend this to anyone that wants a good mental & physical challenge.

In short: For a run which goes up and down the same hill 5 times its very enjoyable
In full: And boy what a hill, each climb is a toughie, picturesque in a number of places.

Slightly too many miles on wide tracks makes it feel slightly unattached from the woods around you. And the style early on made for quite a long bottleneck early in the race.

Excellent organisation, probably the best course marking I've seen. Drinks stations all in the right places.

In short: Great fun, great course, great race
In full: My second Slog and was just as fun as the first. Not PB material at all but that's not what it is about. Fellow runners were encouraging, weather was great, course was tough but a lot of fun and the view on the top of hill is well worth the effort it takes to get there. I'll be back next year!

In short: A lot harder than I thought it would be, and its not the climbs that make it tough its the long inviting flat sections in-between!
In full: Having completed 2 MIdsummer Munro events on Box Hill, I thought that I would give this race a go. I was not disappointed. This is a lot harder than it looks on paper, and it has (according to my Garmin) just over 1500 feet of total ascent over the HM distance.
Great organisation and scenery make this a race I will be doing again next year.

In short: Hills. Yep, they weren't joking.
In full: Loved every minute apart from the queue over the style less than a mile in. The last hill goes on for ever but super location, great course, best organisation you'll find anywhere and excellent facilities at the school. Can we go in the pool afterwards next year?

In full: Hilly and tough but the scenery is stunning. very well organised and a friendly bunch. No chance of a PB but don't let that stop you!
