In short: Definitely doing this one again! In full: First time in Bracknell, it's my local race now so really wanted to do it. Weather forecast was dreadful but we were very lucky on the day, perfect conditions for me. Hills weren't bad at all - not after some of the races I've done! Marshalls and supporters were brilliant and spurred me on to knock 5 mins off my pb :o) Don't normally do a race more than once but I think this might become a regular for me. Thank you to the organisers for a great event x Date of review: April 28, 2014
In short: Those who weren't racing made the race! In full: Organized like clockwork. Spectators were amazing and really made the race what it was! Excellent goodie bag too! Date of review: April 27, 2014
In short: If you live near enough not to require an overnight stop then there's enough about the event to make it worth doing every year. In full: The event's organisation was superb. Lots of free parking close to the start/finish lines. Space for spectators to watch and wait for entrants. Race info arrived in plenty of time. Cheaper than many half-marathons. Plenty of marshalls to give directions and signs at every turn. Lots of the marshalls and spectators were very supportive. And road signs to help find the event, too. Substantial medal with design unique to the event. Announcer was enthusiastic and supportive, and could be heard from the car parks, which made finding the start simple. Helpful people removing the timing chip at the end. Goody bag and t-shirts easily accessible at the finish. And the t-shirt was better than I was expecting.
Only two gripes. The first was the length of the uphill section between about 5-8 miles. I wasn't wearing a GPS so I don't know how long it was, and it may turn out to be significantly shorter. Nor was it the steepest of hills. Not liking it probably says more about my lack of fitness and experience than the chosen route but I wanted to explain why I didn't give higher marks for beginner friendliness or PB potential. It was only my second half-marathon and the first was virtually flat. That said, I did beat the time for my first race, so perhaps I'm complaining too much about the hill.
The other gripe was the scenery. I don't know the area well, so I don't know if there were realistic alternatives, but it was a bit dull.
The positive hugely outweigh the negatives, though.
Many thanks to the organisers, volunteers and spectators. Date of review: April 27, 2014
In short: A good run - no complaints - and a PB! In full: The first 6 miles are level or down-hill so this part of the race is relatively fast. The slight up-hills come after that, so you tend to slow down a little from this point. 110m elevation gain means it is not as flat as the Gosport half (along the sea front), but considerably less hilly than the Basingstoke half. Plenty of under-passes and cycle-tracks to keep you away from traffic for long sections. Quite a small event with just under 1,000 runners. Perfect organisation.
In short: Superb race, great value for money! In full: Love this local race, it's challenging with a number of hills but what goes up must come down and that is the case with this undulating course! Well supported throughout, fantastic marshalling and plenty of water stops! A lot less crowded than Reading or Wokingham and a much better goodie bag! It's certainly worth doing, there is a potential for a PB too! Date of review: April 27, 2014
In short: Fantastic organised friendly and great support! In full: By far the best value event in the south. May be biased as the organiser's offspring but as I came back for a 2nd year running, must be a great race. Medal is beautiful and well worth the pain! Said never again but already looking at my next half.... Good job Senior Vaal! Date of review: April 27, 2014
In short: Not for a beginner unless they can cope with hills a-plenty! In full: Really nice change of pace from Reading half with less people, much friendlier. Route was well organised and v well supported especially at the nasty hills between 7-10miles. Finish was nice setting and again very well supported. Hills a real feature! Date of review: May 1, 2013
