In short: Out on the road was well marshalled and plenty drink stations, finish was poor. In full: Poor finish - told go inside to look for your (very nice) momento, why not have them as you finished ? RW event description mentioned a T-shirt - I did not see any ? Date of review: March 22, 2010
In short: Hardest Marathon so far - boy those hills hurt. In full: Thought well organised and in view of size of field couldn't ask for anything more. Agree with all previous comments, especially about the hills getting steeper each lap. Just thankful we didn't run the course the other way around with the steep downhill (which provided a different strain on the legs) would have been even harder than the one at the beginning/end of each lap.
Just glad we only went for the "sprint version!!" 4 laps was one too many for us. Date of review: March 22, 2010
In short: Course was harder than advertised, scenery was fantastic In full: Beautiful day, scenery and very friendly atmosphere. Course had it's fair share of hills, still managed a PB even though I went out too fast and got my nutrition completely wrong. Bit too expensive though!! Date of review: March 21, 2010
In short: Glorious day in the Cotswolds but those hills were unforgiving. In full: Merely ran the Marathon- complete respect to those hard men and women that ran the 35 miles Ultra. To face that hill from the race HQ to the 10 miles marker three times would have been too much for me. Twice was a mental and physical challenge.
We were lucky today - great sunny weather with only minimal wind - perfect conditions although it warmed up in the afternoon. The route is incredibly scenic, although the course profile was undulating and some nasty hills.
Took it easy on the first of my three laps, and this allowed me to assess the course difficuly. I would say it was one of the toughest road marathons that I've ever undertaken - certainly more testing than Snowdonia and Cornish in my opinion, although a special marathon because of it. Pacing is really important, and the conservative start allowed me to hang in there (just!) to achieve my target time.
Organisers have laid on a great debut event. Pre-event information was clear and helpful, the 1 mile walk to the start was notified in advance and saved us from running that nasty hill on the first lap! Route marking was accurate, and the wristband system was well managed so no chance of missing the final turn after the required number of laps. Roads were fairly quite but you had to be wary when crossing over for the turns etc. Marshals were brilliant - idealy placed to prevent runners going offroute and very surportive. Water/high stations were three miles apart, but another one per lap would have been perfect as the day became quite warm. Super glass block momento, and reasonably priced refreshments afterwards.
Apparently, this event was staged to allow some UK athletes to achieve qualification times on the Ultra distance after the Draycote Water event was cancelled earlier this year - some top quality runners and I enjoyed 'competing' alongside them (at least for the first few yards) and to see them achieve such impressive times.
Thanks to Norman and the team for a superb day of running. Date of review: March 21, 2010
In short: Tough hills, great crowd, decent loos ! In full: Excellent race, well organised, very leisurely start, good to see decent loos without queueing. Walk to start was odd but again, good to have a relaxed chat with fellow runners. Hills were challenging and the main one, a nightmare! Was pretty warm so that made it a bit tougher too although great to have a sunny one. Last couple of miles were just too much for me today and I slipped over the 4 hour mark but was just pleased to finish after nearly continuing to my car at lap two! Only disappointments were inadvertantly wiping my watch before recording my times and then dropping my paper weight on my stone floor - doh! Have asked Anne if I can buy a new one so fingers crossed! Great race, thoroughly enjoyed. Date of review: March 21, 2010
