In short: A good calorie burner! In full: Firstly, thank god I changed to trail shoes. I saw many slipping and sliding, the trail shoes gripped nicely on the snow, slush and mud.
A tough race in freezing conditions and biting wind. Very good for burning off those Xmas calories. I was prepared for 14 miles rather than 12.7 miles. This meant that general race pacing and my usual final mile of upping the pace was spoilt which resulted in a slower time. I was ok with my Garmin, but mile markers were desperatley needed for those without. It would have been a desolate run not knowing how much of the course I'd run. Otherwise, very well organised and hopefully will be back next year. Date of review: December 27, 2010
In short: Great course, challenging, varied terrain In full: Well done to the organisers for not cancelling the race. We all knew it would be icy and slippy, but it made it even more challenging event. Great course, mixture of concrete tracks and off-road with plenty of undulating bits! Shame it was only 12.7 miles (measured on Garmin) but then a nice surprise to see the finish. Excellent marshalling and lots of water stations. Date of review: December 27, 2010
In short: Tough in the conditions - snow and ice still on the ground In full: From reading the forum comments on last year's race I was expecting very little 'real' off-road and while the bulk of the race was on firm track / military road the longish section of rutted mud track in the second half was very energy sapping plus the section in and out from the start /finish was lethal in places. The event 'centre' was a bit cheerless and someone to direct parking would have been a help. I'm not sure 4 portaloos constitute 'ample toilet facilities' given the entry limit and I'm not sure where the supervised baggage storage or changing areas were [in the trees behind the barn perhaps]. A couple of mile markers would definitely have helped and I also made it 12.7. Date of review: December 27, 2010
In short: The ice and the new route made it a testing trail race. In full: Well done to the organisers for going ahead with the race. It was icy and slippery. The new route took in more tracks than the first running last year. With the conditions not a race for beginners.Organisation was good. Plenty of marshalls around, which was reassuring if you slipped. One improvement is to have some mile markers, even if only 5 and 10 miles. A friend with a garmin said it was 12.7 miles.
