In short: I wasn't prepared... In full: for the hills!!! Nevertheless, I stuck it out and was really glad crossing the finish line, especially in the wet and windy weather, I'm astonished I did not break an ankle. My thanks go out to the marshalls who helped us at the back to keep going and I would also like to thank the ladies I was running with, although we didn't chat much, I appreciated their company!! In short: Wind, rain, mud, hills - great race In full: A tough start to the year with howling gales, rain and serious hills but a well organised, scenic (apparently) race with very friendly people, lovely marshalls and a great goody bag. Thanks Tadworth! Date of review: January 7, 2007
In short: Ouch! In full: An utterly miserable day compared to last year when it was brilliant sunshine. This is a tough undulating route. I had not run for a fortnight and my lack of fitness showed as I was reduced to walking after 6 miles. I recovered to make it to the end in 95 minutes but boy was it tough! In short: Well worth the effort. Some lengthy hill climbs and very steep in parts too. Conditions made off road parts more challenging. Enjoyable race in nice surroundings. Date of review: January 7, 2007
In short: A particularly strong wind whistling across the downs did nothing to... In full: Dampen spirits. Even when accompanied by that horrible fine rain which gets you soaked through and stings eyes.
The welcome from the organisers added to lovely helpful cheery marshalls, the beautiful views you know exist behind the curtain of mist across Epsom Downs, the super (always unusual and very useful) token at the end with water stations a plenty and even Quality Street en route made it a very pleasant start to the racing year.
I'll be back next year. Date of review: January 7, 2007
In short: I came back for some more! In full: Given that I left my hand towel at the finish last year (the momento), I came back for some more! The gloves were a nice touch instead. Given the windy times, I suspect many runners times were down on last year. Still a great race to blow those New Year cobwebs away. Some more local support would have been appreciated. I'll be back Date of review: January 7, 2007
