In short: Excellent in all ways In full: I too was a bit dubious about starting the race at "The Theatre of Dreams", but it was an excellent experience all round. I improved my PB by 8 minutes (and both other runners I know did too). The water stands were frequent and the water pouches were top-class. Mancunians turned out in great numbers and in some places it felt like London - it was fantastic! Unlike last year's fiasco, the start and finish area was well-organised and efficient. As for the course, flat as a pancake but my Garmin indicated it to be 330 metres under the distance (I notice another runner had a similar experience). A really positive experience. In short: Bland course. But it was flat, well organised and support was immense. In full: As a Liverpool season ticket holder, I wasn’t convinced that a marathon starting and ending at Old Trafford was going to be an enjoyable experience, but it was.
Organisation was great and the marshalling was efficient and friendly. Very well equipped race village too. The course is a bit suburban, rather than city centre, but let’s be honest, after 20 miles you could be anywhere.
But what made this race memorable were the people who turned out in their droves to support the runners. Can’t have been more than a couple of miles (c19-20 miles) where the support was thin, but so many more miles where there was an unbroken line of support, several people deep in some places.
Decent goody bag, nice race t-shirt and a chunky medal just added to the feeling that this is a big city race.
Thank you Manchester (and it’s not often I say that).
In short: much improved on last year In full: Better route and organisation than last year. However, my split timings are totally wrong. I also checked the fastest runner in my category V45 who was timed as being at the finish earlier than he was at 20miles - unless he can time travel, just not possible! Apparently they're sorting this but I'm annoyed about it. I got a PB and thought the timing would be accurate in a chip timed event. Date of review: April 29, 2013
In short: I swore after 2012 that I would never do this race again, but in fairness to the organisers, they took our feedback on board and have come back with what could be a great annual North West marathon. In full: The debacle of 2013 left me never wanting to run the Gtr Manchester maratahon again. They listed to our complaints. The start area and race village ran like clockwork. The parking (although a bit steep at £9) was brilliant, being so close to the start and finish. The route was better (no field at Dunham Massey to cross) and the water and fuel stations were plentiful and well stocked. The course was well supported all the way round and last mile was incredible. The only thing i may suggest is to have more regular distance markers, but using a Garmin, it wasn't a problem for me. Congratulations to xtramileevents for listening to what we had to say, acting upon it, and for giving us an excellent day Date of review: April 29, 2013
In short: big improvement In full: i have to say i only did this again to see if the organisers kept their promises after last years debacle. Parking was easy although paying £9 to park is a bit steep although being so close to race village meant I didnt have to bother with baggage tent as i kept it all in my car. Good enough course and definitely good for pb's as I knocked 38 mins off my last time! The support from the people of manchester was amazing as good as London easily they really made you feel great. Id definitely do it again in a few years time although it would be nice to incorporate both football clubs and some city centre into it but that may just complicate things re organisation Date of review: April 29, 2013
In short: A Massive Improvement In full: I also took part in last year's race, which couldn't be any worse but had a great time yesterday. Would still prefer to be going through the centre down Deansgate at some point, and the price is too steep - should not be more than London! Good PB though and Andy was great on the mic!
