In short: Heat wave! In full: This is a lovely race on roads/trails in the picturesque New Forest but this year was so hot! The marshals were amazing and thank you to the people who lived along the course for the hose downs but the heat wiped me (and a lot of others!) out. I've never seen so many people walking, pulling out of a race or so many medical staff during the course of a race! But the weather clearly isn't down to the organisers so full marks to them for coping with it as best they could! Date of review: March 9, 2014
In short: My favourite mixed terrain race In full: A very well organised race, as usual. The Marshalls were friendly and encouraging and sweltering in the heat in their hi viz bibs. The timing chip, attached to the back of the race number was an improvement over the Velcro strap round the ankle used in previous races. No struggling to remove it with the help of Marshalls at the finish. The only downside, as per previous years was the heat, but the 3 drinks stations were well spaced and efficiently run. This was my 21st run and all being well, will be back again next year. Date of review: July 18, 2013
In short: Hot but scenic race In full: Great race just dont expect a pb due to the heat & mix of surfaces used for the race. Just a shame the race didn't start earlier to avoid some of the heat Date of review: July 17, 2013
In short: Good race but running in such heat made it less enjoyable In full: Everything about this race was great - the route, the runners, the scenery, the lovely medals, the hospitality - but to be a Scrooge, the heat made the second half of the race less than enjoyable. I think the race should have started earlier and would have had yet another drinks station to do it justice because this unrelenting sunshine heat experience would put me off running here next year.
But thanks to the organisers for making it an otherwise very pleasant trip to Brockenhurst. Date of review: July 15, 2013
In short: Superbly marshalled, well-organised race In full: Hated the heat, loved everything else about this race. It ran like clockwork, the drinks stations were brilliantly manned as everyone grabbed water due to the weather, the scenery was great, course 90% flat and the start/finish area was great. I assume the 11:15 start is to allow parents to run with their children in the earlier fun runs, so can't really fault the organisers for starting so late when it's so hot. Will certainly look to be back next year. Date of review: July 15, 2013
In short: Hot, sweaty, fun In full: What a great race; a beautiful course through the New Forest, mostly on gravelled tracks with some tarmacked sections, plenty of parking, loos, and water, squash and a hosing down at the end. Not much chance of a PB due to the blistering heat, but a nice flat course otherwise.
Thank you to all the organisers for a great event, top marks go to the chap at the 5 mile point with a hose. Date of review: July 15, 2013
In short: Beautiful Course In full: First time doing this race and I now see what the hype was all about. The most gorgeous route of any run I have ever done - sections through the woodland with New Forest ponies sheltering under the trees, followed by tracks across the open heathland. As others have posted, it was stupidly hot - over 30 degrees and large sections of the route had zero shade. That said, it put all thoughts of a PB out of my head and I just focused on getting through it without fainting (!) and enjoying the scenery. Earlier start time of 9am would be a good move due to the heat of a July race - definitely be back though.
And to the man at 5 miles who had his garden hosepipe out spraying everyone - I owe you a kiss! You saved my life! Date of review: July 15, 2013
