In short: One of my all time favourite races! In full: Missed out last year, managed to bag a transfer this year, and WOW was it worth it.
This is one of those races that plasters an enormous grin on the chops the whole way round! Misleading start on the road, after half a mile I wondered what all the fuss about the mud was. Hahaha it had yet to appear!! A lot of stinky mud, a lot of smelly water, a dunking in the sheep dip, a soaking in the pig trough and 2 tumbles meant I was covered from head to toe in brown stuff by the end! I didn't find the race too hilly, but very slippy mud in places and quagmires in others made for slow going.
Truly great camaraderie from every other runner, clockwork organisation from start to finish. Great value for the entry fee, decent changing facilities at the end. And I got a spot prize for 'looking like I had tried hard', Brilliant!!!
Will make sure I get my entry in early next year, as this is a truly fantastic race. Date of review: November 14, 2012
In short: Best fun you can have with your clothes on - get filthy without getting told off by your mum! Wonderful, wonderful race. In full: This is my all-time favourite race. It's tough, not just because there are some hilly bits but because if you're towards the back of the field, as I am, you are slipping and sliding in the mud that's been churned up by over 1000 pairs of feet before you! But it's just brilliant. Organisation is incredibly smooth, the marshals are encouraging and friendly (although none of them wanted a hug from me - I wonder why?) and the camaraderie amongst the runners is heart-warming, as people stop to haul someone back to their feet and encourage others to splash right in the middle of the deepest muddy bits. The bugler playing the Last Post, the two minute silence and the respect given to Remembrance Day all add to the specialness that is this race. Keep on doing what you're doing, organisers - this is the best race going!Thank you. Date of review: November 14, 2012
In short: Superb organisation, wonderful Marshalls, great atmosphere, lots of mud and great value. In full: A faultless race and one to put in your diary if you haven't done it. It is deserving of all the praise given it over the years and should continue to be a very successful event in the future. I first ran it when it was known as the 'Beagle Bash' and approx. 10 miles. I've run it several times since and it never fails in any aspect to please. This is an event that many other race organisers would do well to use as a 'role model' for organisation.
The course always changes, but always has the first 1 mile on the road and the last mile on roads and paths. In between: mostly off-road, flat and very muddy and wet in places. Quite energy-sapping, but like others have said, it brings a smile to your face and makes you glow all over.
The facilities at the School are superb. Changing rooms, showers and plenty of bogs. Nice touch to have water hoses at the end to rinse off the mud and a recycling area for trainers, etc.
Nice range of prizes and good non-technical long-sleeved t-shirt and 'goody' bag. More than just a bag of leaflets, as in some bags at other events.
Just a couple of small suggestions: perhaps trophies or something similar instead of vouchers(very limited use) for winners prizes and more of a range of refreshments in the sports hall for post-run recovery. Only minor things, not a complaint or a moan.
Many thanks to all those involved in the organisation, the Marshalls and other helpers for putting on another great race. Long may it continue. Date of review: November 13, 2012
In short: A great experience! In full: Loved it! Great cameraderie as you plough through the mud and water. Marshalls were superb, and local folk turn out en route to cheer you on. If only all events were like this. Date of review: November 13, 2012
In short: Tough but rewarding In full: Tough but rewarding. Not the first time I have done an event like this is certainly the muddiest and the steepest!! Great Atmosphere. The last post being played at the start was very moving. Will come back but probably 2014 as already busy this time next year!! Date of review: November 12, 2012
